2009 Mini Cooper Clubman

2009 Mini Cooper Clubman

The car model was named the Mini because it was, well, small.  John Cooper was a designer of racing and rally cars, who saw potential in using the Mini as a basis for rally cars.  Technically, only the tuned high-performance models designed by him were called Mini Cooper – in colloquial use, the name stuck for all Minis, though.  If you've ever witnessed one of the original design Minis racing on the track, they are fun to watch because they are like go carts in that they just slide around turns!

The use of the name "Clubman" for the Mini estate van was a break with classic Mini tradition.  "Clubman" was originally the name given to the 1970s face-lift of the classic Mini, which mostly resulted in a squared-off front end, whereas the classic Mini estates had traditionally been named "Traveller" or "Countryman".  However, BMW did not initially purchase the rights to use those names.  For consignment, from our friends at BMW, a 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman.  Small but mighty with seating for 4 this car lives up to its name…Mini, and the mileage, which is title verified, follows suit at a mere 17,180.

Exterior
This being a small car I'll keep it short!  All bathed in British Racing Green Metallic with some black highlighting on the rockers, bumper tops, window surrounds and long, (well long for a mini), roof.  The glossy black appears again racing rearward on the short hood and shows up again on the splitdoor boot.  The front grille shines with a snappy grin and is flanked on either side by a single headlight.  Fog lights are embedded in the neoprene lower bumper and black mirrors on black stalks are adhered to either door, and with the gaps on this car they are well minded.   On the back, below the glass rear window and barn doors is another neoprene bumper in green and black.  When opened the barn doors give access to a mini storage area behind the rear seats.  15-inch 5 spoke alloy wheels are wrapped in low profile Cooper rubber, (how ironic), from the 18th week of 2020.

Interior
Opening the doors, a shiny egg shaped panel is housing the door pulls along the power mirror controls, a small speaker with a lower speaker all floating in a sea of Carbon Black and gray molded vinyl.  As we slipped inside, the designers were obsessed with a compass as all the instruments are circular and come in a flurry of different sizes throughout the dash, including a large central speedometer.  This instrument has a few modes to play with including the AM/FM radio and a single CD player below.  Under this dash are more rounds for the heater/AC controls along with a few toggles.  Eyeball vents are also peppering the dash.  Racy high back buckets have a mix of Carbon Black and gray stitched over the exaggerated body hugging bolsters all in leatherette.  A low profile console races forward to meet the dash and holds a small storage area, cup holders and the leather wrapped shift lever.  The rear seats are in the same motif and all in black or charcoal gray coloring.  Black carpeting floods the floors including the small storage area in the back and a light gray fuzzy broadcloth headliner hangs above with a Jesus handle for all of the passengers.

Drivetrain
A 1.6 Liter DOHC inline 4 cylinder making 118hp is fed by EFI and looks nearly showroom fresh.  Bolted to the back is a Getrag 6-speed manual which throws power forward to a 4.35 geared axle.

Undercarriage
Clean with no rust just plenty of undercoating.  Independent McPherson struts are upfront, and on the back, independent multi-link suspension provides the handling and ride.  Power disc brakes are all around and an original exhaust is nice and clean with no rust.

Drive-Ability
Our consignor states and we agree that this car is like new, and even has a touch of the new car smell left in it.  She fired right up though and gave us a fun ride with great handling and snappy acceleration, a definite smile on your face kinda car to tool around in.

British Racing Green on black on black and gray but it all has enough tones and textures to work together and look great.  A few very small chips, but a nice mini machine with room to haul 4 and bring your cargo along with.  Smooth power, and good mechanicals.  Come on down, and we can do the opposite of supersize!
