1965 Pontiac GTO Coupe
1965 Pontiac GTO Coupe
In early 1963 a team of engineers and designers got together at Pontiac, and decided to focus more on street racing and power. The Tempest had been in production for a bit, and a more “muscular” powerful car was needed. Hence the acronym GTO or Grand Tempest Option became the code for the secret new development that would take place. John DeLorean actually claims the GTO came from the Italian Gran Turismo Omologato or Grand Touring Homologated, (certified), which in reality the car was never meant for grand touring, but to be the fastest straight line Pontiac produced.
For consignment, PHS documented, correct drivetrain muscle car with WT block with an added tri power intake, stacked front headlights, the unique Pontiac “beak” up front on the split grille, and bathed in nicely applied and carefully finished color change to Linden Green. Inside is a Hurst shifter and a like new white interior to compliment the rotisserie frame off nut and bolt restoration, so you can easily get your classic “Goat” groove on. Definitely one of the nicest examples of the 1965 GTO to ever grace our Hallowed Halls.
Exterior
Stacked dual headlights, a split horizontal grille, a small “beak” in front, GTO badging, nice chrome bumper, dual nostril scooped hood opened up for Ram Air, straight steel side slabs taken down to bare metal, then all bathed in a color change to Linden Green with a Cameo White painted roof best describes the beginnings of this car. Carrying on, nice trimmings for the green tinted glass and a pristine metal roofline. The side slabs are near perfect and sport well minded gaps. Bringing up the rear are the horizontal ribbed bezel tail lights in the flared at the edges rear vertical deck, just below the trunk lid covering a NYC 2 bedroom apartment sized trunk. Another pristine chromed bumper below, and on all 4 corners 14-inch Pontiac Rally 1 wheels with deep dish trim and correct black hand painted stripe on center caps and all wrapped in reproduction radials to look like FR770-14 red line rubber. Looking great for the outside….let's go inside!
Interior
All new from Legendary Interiors on the inside with Strato bucket seats in white vinyl installed. These have tuck and roll inserts with angled white inserts which are embossed in and have the Pontiac arrowhead logo embossed in the centers of the backs of all seats. Smooth bolsters and white piping as a border with some chromed side trimmings for the hinges. The rear bench stretches across the back of the car and offers up plenty of pristine seating for 3 adults. A tall 1965 Hurst shifter with rebuilt linkage and a white knob topper reaches for the driver's hand and sits within a sea of black carpet growing from the hump. The dash front is original wood appliqué background and has a factory tachometer inserted to the right of the round gauges. A band of ribbed chrome trim runs under the gauges and is even in place for the radio delete panel and a new black padded topper hovers above the Linden Green, chrome and applique dash front. A custom sport wood rimmed with 3 chrome spokes in the center steering wheel fronts this dash. Black carpeting is the floor covering, and is very clean. A perfectly tight and stitched white vinyl headliner is floating above all this perfection.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a fully restored, rebuilt and painted in a beautiful metallic turquoise engine block showing up at 389 cubes, and is circa 1965/1966 block carrying the WT stamping code and an A125, (January 12th 1965), casting date, making this mill date correct. It is rated at 335hp and on top is a tri power 3x2bbl setup for the carbs courtesy of Mike's Tripowers. This mill was balanced during the rebuild and is sporting 9.5:1 compression to keep things pump gas friendly. The #77 casting number cylinder heads have been ported and have been fitted with screw in studs and roller rockers to compliment the roller rockers and roller camshaft. A circa 1964/1965 rebuilt and date-correct Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission is now on back sending power back to a 10 bolt 3.23 rear axle. Chromed valve covers, the trio of round air cleaner covers atop and deep shiny black supple wiring and hoses is fab for the engine. A lot of attention to detail was given under the hood leaving this engine bay looking better than new.
Undercarriage
No surface rust on suspension parts or anywhere, very structurally sound with no invasive rust, solid framing, good rockers and new floor pans as well as a trunk pan and new fuel tank and lines. Independent coil springs for the front with power disc brakes, and a 4 link with coil springs for the rear with power drums are on this car with all new lines and new bushings for the body mounts and suspension. Seen also is a stock, clean dual exhaust. Our consignor notes all new steering linkage along with a 1967 quick ratio manual steering box.
Drive-Ability
A wonderful experience as described by our decoder and test driver. She handled great, accelerated like a 335+hp car should, and had strong bias free brakes on the panic stop. The interior is fully functional and all buttoned up the seating and surfaces. Like new and the factory supplied gauges are a plus for sure! Plenty of get up and go. So we got up and went.
All is looking very fine for the exterior, interior, and drivetrain which is very special under that long hood. A great design year as Pontiac was just coming into its own on the muscle car front. All boxes are checked in this classic, just turn the key and point the beak nose front end towards home.
