1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

Stingrays are commonly found in the shallow coastal waters of temperate seas.  They spend the majority of their time inactive, partially buried in sand, often moving only with the sway of the tide.  When they are inclined to move, most stingrays swim by undulating their bodies like a wave; others flap their sides like wings.  The tail may also be used to maneuver in the water, but its primary purpose is protection.  When swimming under duress, they can propel themselves incredibly fast and nimble through the water.

For consignment, a 3 owner 1966 Bowtie warship, (Corvette), with a 427ci V8 and 4 speed manual drivetrain, Rally Red painted fiberglass, a snappy black interior and a coupe rear curved glass and trunk line that comes to a point.   Side pipes on the rockers, knockoff turbine style wheels, front quarter air vents, (shark gills), 4 way flashers, telescopic steering, an AC car, power antenna and power windows and all restored to very nice condition, over the years, and we now have a classic for your driveway and ultimate enjoyment.  Turn the key and set sail.

Exterior
Code 974AA Rally Red painted fiberglass showing very nicely with no fault's, cracks or crazing, just the deep end of the pool red!  With the split wrap around bumpers, hidden headlights, newly designed grille and a large side faux vented stinger on the hood, the design for the front of this car is meant to slice through the air.  A chromed trimmed windshield surround, and sleek rear of this car with more split wrap around bumpers and round taillights.  These year 'Vettes really had the shark/stingray look.  Speaking of predators, the back deck lid is to die for.  Very close to the split window nirvana, this year uses the solid curved glass that turns into the rear deck and rolls around to form a point at the rear of the car.  On back a pointy rear roll pan houses round tail and backup lights and punch through dual exhaust.  More curve around split, like new rear bumpers, and a shout out to the upper doors which wrap around the roofline just like an aircraft and indeed it was inspired by this.  All this aero art form sits upon 15-inch turbine style knock off hubs and all wrapped up in gold stripe radials and completes the “look”.

Interior
Near perfect black leather covers the bomber style chrome trimmed edged, low back buckets that have a center console with power window toggles racing past them and up to the dash it goes.  Here it ascends skyward housing the vertically mounted AM/FM radio, and temp control knobs with a large chronograph clock in the center.  From here the dash spreads out using 2 eyebrow arched panels, the driver's side housing the gauge and knob cluster, and the passenger side holds the brushed aluminum panel glove box.  Deep black nearly perfect padded vinyl covers the dash top and is all in excellent condition.  A teak wood steering wheel fronts this clean and mean dash and adds a touch of warmth to the overall interior.  Speaking of warmth, showroom condition black carpeting is flooding the floors, and a shout out to the door panels which are also near perfection with their molded plastic and chrome trimmings with chromed cranks, actuator and pulls.  Sleek design for these panels.  Behind the seats is a sea of perfect black carpeting and plenty of storage if you want it.  Easily accessible from a push forward of either seat back.

Drivetrain
Under the flip forward hood is an example of machined art with a full metal jacket 427ci V8 power plant.  During the rebuild the block was bored .060 over and treated to a .010 deck to ensure proper head gasket sealing.  While we cannot verify this mill as numbers matching, we can verify it is correct with a 3869942 casting number and January 1966 casting date.  This is looking fine with Chevrolet Orange valve covers, a single 4-barrel Holley carburetor resides underneath the chromed air cleaner cover, and mixture is sent through a factory Winters aluminum intake manifold.  Correct rectangle port heads (March 1966 casting date and 3783858 casting number) , carry the mixture to each of the 8 cylinders.  Nary even a sign of corrosion or rust, with even the headers being rust free and looking newly blasted.  A numbers matching Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission is bolted to the back and turning the tires is a consignor stated 3.36 posi rear axle.  The axle stamping code denotes a 3.08 Positraction axle that was equipped behind a 427ci V8 powered car (stamping AT 5 4 66).

Undercarriage
All black sprayed metal surfaces with a light coating of surface rust seen throughout.  The fiberglass floor pans have a slight patina and bit of road dirt on them but all is structurally sound and all mixed together with some sporty Corvette independent suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes.  Exhaust piping is quickly routed away from the engine to either side and feeding into those sexy side pipes.

Drive-Ability
A super quick starter, smooth idle and upon the press of the accelerator, a quick response to move forward, so it was off to the test track.  Here it handled like it was on rails, had bias free panic stopping, and fantastic acceleration from that overbored 427ci power plant.  A handful of frowns reared their heads during our drive, those being; the reverse lights did not light, the turn signals didn't function, the radio did not turn on, the odometer and trip meter did not log miles, and the AC has had parts removed, but they are included with your purchase.  Flaws aside it's a beautiful car to see and be seen in.

A well optioned car, all clean and fresh from its restoration in the right red, the curved coupe back, 3 owners, stinger hood, right engine, (427ci V8), and on the prowl for its next victim. “When the shark bites….”
