1987 Nissan 300ZX 2+2

1987 Nissan 300ZX 2+2

Toshio Yamashita said he originally went to school to become an architect, but his father thought he was too small to be on construction sites and signed Yamashita up for the industrial design program instead.  He got his start at Nissan in 1968 in parts design for the A10 Violet, and finally got his big design lead break in April 1984 beginning work on the design of what would become the Z31-generation Nissan Z-car.  Yamashita worked as one of two lead designers on the Z31 alongside Isao Sono.  At the time, the Z-car was really important to Nissan's bottom line and reputation as an automaker, especially in the United States.

For consignment, a 1987 version of what has become the iconic 300ZX.  A far cry from the beginning with the shared Nissan/Datsun badging.  Purchased by our consignor in 2014 and garage kept since, this car is equipped with T-tops, sports a mere 92,745 title verified actual miles, and has made recent trips from Memphis, TN to PA to upstate NY without a hitch.  It presents in well kept condition with the timing belt having been replaced in 2016 with the odometer showing 86,007 miles.  Pure Shape...Power Power...Pure Z

Exterior
A smoked glass “T” topped version that is covered in Platinum Mist Metallic with some nifty black molding running stem to stern down the sexy sides greets us at our first glance of the import skate.  A few chips and touch up are seen in the paint along with the neoprene front bumper not matching the finish on the steel, but all else remains in very good condition.  Partially hidden headlights pop up from the front of the long hood with a front integrated bumper and grille which shows a few scuffs.  Consistent gaps, a rear spoiler, and all being very clean, this car is in great condition from 1987.  Aerodynamic straight angled raked lines and glass that works with steel to create a popular mid '80's look.  A side view of this car gives the viewer the impression the car is speeding even when it is standing still.  Standard alloy wheels are noted all around with hints of the 80's square and rectangle design are wrapped in like new 215/60R15 rubber from the 6th week of 2021.

Interior
Presenting as very clean with very slightly worn and perfectly aged dark blue leather all around, we cross the threshold and move into the interior.  We see a tilt column, power windows and power locks.  While not equipped with the voice warning system, other technological features in this 300ZX include a full analog display dash with very nicely engineered graphics, a premium AM/FM/Cassette stereo with a factory EQ, cruise control, and a full length sweeping console with a sprinkling of silver inserts.  Moving rearward we meet up with a pair of body hugging leather clad buckets and just behind is a large storage area with bags and straps to hold the factory T-tops along with some clean blue carpet.

Drivetrain
An original and showing some light patina  on the V6 3.0 Liter EFI engine, which runs smoothly, and is attached to a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission.  A 3.70 geared rear axle moves you down the road swiftly.  Our consignor notes that the timing belt was replaced at 86,007 miles in 2016.

Undercarriage
Underneath we can see typical wear and tear, some surface rust, but overall structurally sound, even on the lower portions of the doors there is virtually no rust whatsoever.  Independent suspension, Macpherson strut in the front and coil springs in the rear is noted along with 4 wheel power disc brakes.   Rounding out our tour is a single exhaust system with a stock replacement muffler.

Drive Ability
A quick starter, good handling and braking and a nice comfy cruiser. Some extra fun with the T tops off and the R12 charged AC blowing cold.

A well kept 2+2 version of the 300ZX right out of 1987, this car holds up nicely.  Certainly not perfect, but a nicely preserved interior, good paint, no rust, and loaded with technology.  T-Tops out, wind in your hair and your foot to the floor...It doesn't get any better than this!
