1964 Cobra 289 FIA Roadster

1964 Cobra 289 Fia Roadster

The rare car market can be fraught with inconsistency, lost documents, and make it difficult for one to discern what is original and what is not.  Then you have a 40-60 year old vehicle to contend with mechanically, and there is a learning curve there as well.  A rare car is a wonderful thing if you can afford it, and it is truly well documented.  Enter the kit car era, where one can get a replica body, put in what they want, and viola!  They have an original looking rare car but totally drivable with little worries about maintenance.

As the saying goes there is more than one way to skin a cat, or you can have your cake and eat it too!  The solution lies in this classic kit car from the folks at Unique Motorcars, and, in this case it's all wrapped up for you.  With only 5 original 289 Fia Cobra's built, they don't often come up for sale so just get in and drive this multi-time show winner and feature car in Kit Car magazine in 2002 that is looking great with its optional hardtop, a striking color combo and powerful V8 under the hood.  Long story short, this car has a lot going for it.

Exterior
Words like Awesome, Really Cool, Gorgeous, Great Job come to mind when gazing at this car.  Sandstone Beige Metallic with wide maroon stripes running the gamut in the center harken back to the racing heritage these cars were racking up in the mid 60's.  A driver's side black roll bar is neatly tucked under the optional fastback style removable hardtop, and wing glass side shield windows are on to keep your hair where it belongs.  Side curtains with sliding windows make this an all year round cruiser and those amazing snaking from underneath big side pipes emanate from the front wheel well draw your eyes in for a second glance.  Aluminum front and rear quick-jacks are in lieu of any bumpers and a rear hinged trunk opens up providings ample storage space.  Also, lest I forget, authentic style knock off Pen Drive wheels wrapped in BFG Radial T/A's.  Definitely adorned and set up for a track somewhere near you.

Interior
Black leather bomber style buckets mimic the original.  The small driver's compartment is covered in black carpet and the buckets are equipped with Simpson multi-point racing belts.  A very nice black leather padded dash front is gauge encrusted and has plenty of toggles and some air vents.  Yes, this snake has heat and the nicety of an under dash AM/FM/CD stereo.  Fronting the dash is a wood rimmed AC 3 spoke rally wheel, and just to drivers right on the hump is a chrome handled Cobra style manual shifter.  The door panels are finished with deep pockets in smooth black leather and in lieu of a glovebox the passenger gets to monitor the speed.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 351ci Windsor V8 making a consignor stated 400hp.  It has been fitted with a Comp Cams camshaft, Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads, and is fired by MSD ignition.  It is backed by a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission and topped with an Edelbrock intake and thirst quenching 650cfm Holley carburetor.  On the back making the tires spin is a Jaguar independent 3.50 geared Posi rear axle.  We note the recent addition of electric power steering for the ease of drive-ability.

Undercarriage
A black painted custom tube and bar chassis, custom fabricated aluminum and fiberglass inner structure, firewall, and trunk floors and all finished to show quality.  The front features electric power rack and pinion steering and an independent suspension with coil overs, and in the back, a Jaguar independent suspension system with a quad of coil-overs.  4-wheel disc brakes all around to put the hooks out and the sidepipes are there to rack off and wake up the neighborhood.

Drive-Ability
This car with its awesome power can quickly become a handful, so we took it easy.  It was nice to listen to the powerful roar as we accelerated up to highway speed and took a few corners in the track where it handled like it was on rails.  Bias free braking, and all functioning added up to a pleasurable and exciting experience.

We could rate this car top wrenched, because it has an all buttoned up power plant, no rust and snappy interior.  I personally love the Sandstone Beige paint, wide stripes and chrome side pipes, and removable fastback style hardtop.  It truly handles like it's on rails...Go ahead, make your day.
