1968 Mercury Monterey Convertible

1968 Mercury Monterey Convertible

The Monterey Peninsula, in particular the City of Monterey is the gateway to the peninsula. Upon entering, the world changes and as you head south through Pebble Beach, Carmel, Big Sur, things get even better. Mercury introduced the Monterey in 1952, and immediately it was associated with the high end of the spectrum, emulating the peninsula it was named for.

This 1968 Mercury Convertible allows you to enjoy the wind in your hair, and the sun in your shoulders, as you travel down the forever winding PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). Several improvements and upgrades have been performed on this car since the consigner purchased it. An important item of note is as this presents beautifully, and is a good working example, and very clean car, a gaze underneath reveals a flaw that needs to be addressed before proceeding forward with any use. That being there is areas of rust through on the frame, which could potentially render this car unsafe until a repair has been performed. Note the pictures of the underside and study carefully prior to making an offer.

Exterior
Red, Red, Red, in good condition is the paint color for this Monterey. A clean white power top with glass window, consigner states is new is in very nice condition, however, shows a minor tear in the top. Brite work and chrome bumpers are all there, correct badging, and all exterior lighting in excellent condition. Interior of trunk has a lot of surface rust, and minor scaling within the surface rust. Consigner states that the grille, headlight doors, rear bumper and trim are NOS (New Old Stock).

Interior
New upholstery is seen throughout the passenger compartment, as well as new cut and sewn carpet to match original. A new well liner and tack strip has been mounted in. Split back bench upfront, and a bench across the rear are all in beautiful black. The walnut veneer dash, in pristine condition houses all the essentials. Factory air is an option this car has, and a York A/C air compressor was rebuilt and installed, however air does not blow cold due to other leaks in the system. Door panels, arm rests, and dash top are very clean, blemish free, and crack free.

Drivetrain
390 cubic inches graces the engine bay, and a 2-barrel carburetor is perched on top. Within the last 8,000 miles, this engine has undergone a complete overhaul and fresh tune up, as has the carburetor. The automatic transmission has received the same treatment with a torque converter redux as well. A rebuilt power steering pump, alternator, distributor, and an added Pertronix electronic ignition have this car running like new.

Undercarriage
As noted above the frame has rust through spots and will need to be repaired to restore structural integrity. Otherwise surface rust is seen underneath. Also, seen are a new rebuilt front suspension including coil springs. A y-pipe exhaust has been installed, the radiator has been recored, and brakes have been rebuilt, as well as soft parts surrounding the suspension.

Overall this car presents beautifully, and mechanically is sound. Many hours have been put into this by the consigner, and it shows, nicely. It is a reliable car with careful use of NOS parts staying as close to original as possible. One flaw is holding this beautiful car from greatness.
