1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria

1956 Ford Crown Victoria

The 1955-1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria was the crowning gem of the bright two-tone and chrome era.  One of the most imaginative cars of an imaginative decade, it took off for the heavens in looks -- but never in sales.  1956 was a great year to be shopping for your first new car.  Chevy finally had a V-8 and looked as cool as Kim Novak in a stretch-nylon swimsuit.  Plymouth was hotter than the Cuban Mambo, strutting the first year of Virgil Exner's "Forward Look" styling and boasting a V-8 of its own.  Ford, whose overhead-valve V-8 was now in its second year, sported many advanced styling themes, with a deliberately strong association to the new Thunderbird.

Any time we get stunning 50s era Detroit metal into our Classic Auto Mall showroom, it tends to attract a lot of attention and usually doesn't stick around very long.  This example which is showing some age but still holds its shine, plus  having undergone some engine work, (new piston rings,) and new bearings for the axles, a new radiator and some recent black respray on the hood, trunk and right quarter panels.  The snappy interior now features a CD player and a new tachometer to monitor that engine.

Exterior
With a single coating of Raven Black this car takes the term sinister with its chrome trimmings to another level.  Nicely presenting with a good shine, there is slight fading and scratching on various panels, some chip offs and a bit of earlier repairs to the seams on the bodywork.  Breaking up the sea of black we see the use of a chrome side swoop spear, chrome window surrounds chrome badging, and very nice chrome bumpers.  From the front of the hood cloisonné shield, to the jet age hood ornament, and Fairlane badging in your grandmother's handwriting, we are in drive-in-heaven.  The basket handle B pillar and sleek nearly fast back styling on the rear glass adds to the allure.  The beginnings of small fins top rocket engine-esque round tail lighting.  Fender skirts are on and add to the low and slow feel of this beauty.  Wide white walls with 15-inch dog dish chromed wheel coverings and a central Ford cloisonné badge in red are sitting on all 4 corners.  Right down to the lighted trimming on the antenna this car drops with early 50's styling.  Get your DA greased, put the cigs in your sleeve and let's move to the inside….Ca, ca, ca, cool man!

Interior
Flipping up the key hole covering, pushing the nicely preserved chromed handle button, and pulling on that handle, we move the swoop spear swoop out of the way so we can slide on in.  Feasting our eyes on this very 50's, very nicely done interior I'm in love..me tender.  With masterful use of black painted steel and white vinyl, and of course plenty of chrome borders, the door panels have me all shook up.  Im taking in the black and white stitched vinyl in vertical rectangle pattern which shows very clean all in.  Two full benches, front and a rear, swim in a sea of wonderful black thick pile carpet.  These benches are white vinyl bolstered with a fern stitched broadcloth pattern inserted in black with some white stitching.  Just beautifully preserved and like new.  Gazing forward we greet the  exterior matching dash in all steel with gauges that are very clean and sport circular shaped chrome bezels.   An original steering wheel in black is bordered on the inside by the pie slice shaped horn ring that leaves a 1/3 portion out at the top just to keep your interest.  Below the black is a white steel band housing several knobs and pulls, a chromed panel for the radio and temp sliders and ignition keyhole.  Just below in a new panel is a tachometer and oil pressure gauge.  Also the aftermarket radio hangs out here.   A tight headliner in white with the chromed basket handle breaking it up floats above the interior and shows no stains.  Well that's alright baby, let's go to the Drivetrain section.

Drivetrain
Now sporting these new rings, this factory correct not original RED painted  292ci V8 has a 4-barrel carb now on top.  All this sits within a beautifully restored engine bay, and sports black valve coverings and an open chromed air cleaner on top of the carburetor.  A new master cylinder, battery and starter have been put in.  A new radiator keeps things very cool man.  On the back is a Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic powering a Ford 9 inch 3.00 cogged rear axle.  Dual exhaust with Cherrybomb mufflers is also noted.

Undercarriage
Structurally very sound, and we see some use of body filler on the insides of the rear fenders aft of the wheel wells.  All painted with a heavy coating of rust proofing and black a new shiny fuel tank is installed.  Body hangers and rockers are all solid as is the frame.  Lowering blocks are installed.  Independent coil spring suspension in front, and leaf spring in the rear has this car floating down the road.  Drum brakes are all over this car.  You ain't nuthin but a hound dog…

Drive-Ability
Our crack in-house decoder and car expert fought over who was going to drive this one!  And we resolved it by both doing so.  This car started without a hiccup, shifted beautifully, had a great cushy ride, and was comfortable to sit in.  It's definitely a boulevard cruiser, could be a shower, but for now I'm sticking to driving her.  I can't help falling in love..with this wonderful car.  All was functioning swimmingly at the time of the dual test drives.

We have a turnkey classic that screams mid 50's styling, plenty of chrome, an awesome interior, beautiful and smooth running engine, fair paint, and a nifty exterior and interior color combination, and ready to roll.  Now I'm really all shook up ohh hoo hoo ohh yeah yeah!
