1967 Ford Mustang GT Fastback

1967 Ford Mustang GT Fastback

Ford's General Division Manager was about to introduce the world to the first Ford Mustang, and he knew he had a hit on his hands.  Although badged with horses, the new model was named for the World War II fighter plane and Ford sold more than 400,000 the first year, sending other automakers scrambling to conceive competition. The Mustang was such a smash it catapulted Lee Iacocca to the Presidency of Ford later that year.

Imagine having the coolest new car on the block in 1967, the Ford Mustang. Then ramp that up and imagine the coolest version of said wildly popular Mustang, that being the fastback version.  Couple that with a 390ci V8, strap a 4-barrel carburetor on, add in the GT package and now you are living large.  A great example of this ultimate cool, we give you this Fastback to grace your driveway, and also give you the ability to turn the key and drive away in this fully restored version of one of the most popular cars ever built.  This example spent 45 years in dry storage in the past, is very original with all original metal, a mostly original interior, the original drivetrain and having been repainted in 2017.  A Deluxe Marti Report accompanies this pony along with the original front seats and radio.  This one is so original in fact, that the undercarriage remains untouched and is showing us exactly how the guys and gals at the San Jose assembly plant built them.  Isn't it about time you pony up for this killer GT right out of 1967?

Exterior
From the galloping pony on the front honeycomb grille, to the clear lens fog lights which sit inside the grille and are flanked by a single headlight and all the way back to the sloping rear roof line with the iconic louvers this beautiful pony car possesses nearly no faults.  All the original metal has been retained during the restoration even the chrome is believed to be original with the exception of the trunk lid dress up.  It's all about awe with the stellar condition of the Vintage Burgundy paint that spot on matches the Marti report spec.  All flawlessly maintained and restored, showing with 14-inch chrome styled steel wheels wrapped in 205/70R14 BFG's up front and slightly wider 235/60R14's in the back, and for giggles, let's throw in tasteful stripes just above the stainless rocker molding in glossy white running from wheel well to wheel well.  All glass and surrounding brightwork is in excellent condition and bringing up the rear is a GT emblazoned gas filler cap and concave filler panel between the tri-bar tail lights.  Meanwhile just below, dual tipped dual exhaust protrudes through coves at the bottom of the rear skirt.  It just does not get any better than this.

Interior
Hold that last thought…because throw open the doors and reveal a pristine black vinyl interior seating setup of a 2 plus 2.  This interior is original save for the front seats, but fear not as they are included with your purchase, and frankly it's hard to distinguish between the new and original, it's that good in here!  This is grounded by fade free black carpet which also extends to the rear storage area which can be expanded by folding down the rear seat.  No console, just the carpeted hump races between the seats and holds the chrome arm and black ball topped shifter, well within reach of the driver.   Looking at the dash, we see a wonderful amalgamation of black metal, black vinyl, a brushed aluminum full width insert and chrome bezel circular instruments flanking a speedometer.  More black on the upper door panels, which are highlighted by some chrome trimming handles, and sides of the rear 2 plus 2.  A tight black headliner with clean padded sun visors is above all this excellence.

Drivetrain
A pop of the hood and you'll have to squint, because there is so much bling you will barely be able to stand it!  A proper and consignor stated numbers matching 390ci V8 is bathed in dark Ford blue paint.  This excellence is topped by a single 4-barrel carburetor lurking under the blue bodied and chrome lidded air cleaner.  All appears factory-correct in the engine bay and attached at the back is a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission.  All of this works together to send the big block power back to the original Ford 9" axle weighing in with a 3.00 ratio.

Undercarriage
The hits just keep coming underneath with rust free good floor pans, unibody seams, and structurally sound framing...the reason its so good is because it's the factory metal that the car was born with.  Some light surface rust is appearing on the untreated components and the factory applied red oxide finish is showing off proudly.  Independent coil spring in front and leaf spring suspension on the rear to give this famous pony it's sure-footed ride with some extra grip from the upgraded front sway bar and shocks.  Power disc brakes in the front and power drum brakes in the rear give us the whoah factor and dual exhaust works with glasspack style mufflers to handle the exhale from the mill.  We note a newer ram for the power steering floating amongst all this originality.

Drive-Ability
A wonderful driver, runner, and accelerator.  It ran like it was new with an exhilarating test drive.  After you get past half throttle, this car is a screamer, although traction is limited by the rear tires.  Handling was as expected, stable and competent and during our panic brake test we came to a smooth straight bias free stop.  All functions were working beautifully just like 1967 and the car remains like it was when new with nary a rattle or squeak to be heard.

Flash back to 1967 suburbia in the driveway, hottest car to come along in years, and it's in your neighbor's driveway.  Fast forward we are in the new millennium, same car, now your driveway, and the car just as good, if not better than it did when it left the showroom. Come on down .....Fast....back!
