1984 Cadillac Seville Roadster Sedan

1984 Cadillac Seville Roadster Sedan

The name of "Cadillac's first small car" was selected over a revival of LaSalle or the GM design staff's preference, LaScala, primarily because, as noted by GM Marketing Director Gordon Horsburgh, "It had no negatives.".  The initial suggestion was "Leland" in honor of one of the make's founders but it was rejected because most buyers wouldn't understand the reference and Henry Leland had also founded rival Lincoln.  Hundreds of suggestions were considered after extensive research, LaSalle was the top pick with St. Moritz a distant second, trailed further by Seville.  A troubled past, (Lasalle), and difficult pronunciation, (St.Moritz), led to selection of the Seville nameplate.  Seville is the name of a Spanish province and its capital, renowned for its history and treasures of art and architecture.  Cadillac had first used the nameplate for a two-door hardtop version of the 1956 Eldorado. 1960 was the last model year for the Eldorado Seville, returning in 1967 under a different name.

For consignment,  a clean and obviously garaged 35,262 title verified actual mile 1984 example of the Cadillac Seville Roadster produced to compete with the ever increasing threat of European luxury cars entering the country.  A smaller more compact Caddy, with all the trappings of luxury the larger cars offered at the time.  Purchased new at Polkowitz Motor Company in Perth-Amboy, NJ and retained by the purchaser until 2022, this consignment has come to our Hallowed Halls after being purchased by our consignor from a friend of the original owner.  He has enjoyed the car, has had regular maintenance performed and it is now time to "let this one go".  Big win YOU!

Exterior
With all steel panels straight and true, and definitely no rust in sight, this square and rectangle design car is bathed in beautiful Woodland Haze Metallic.  Chrome all around looks fabulous, badging is near perfect, and bumpers are very nicely preserved as are the fillers.  A full Briar Brown cloth roadster top, also in very nice condition is seen.  This brings us to the  pièce de résistance...the razor-edged bustle-back rear styling that draws inspiration from English coachbuilder Hooper & Co.'s "Empress Line" designs from the early 1950s.  This is considered a dramatic, modern take on the mid-'30s style of trunk/body integration.  In addition, long hood/short deck proportions were inspired by luxury cars of the 1960's and are quite fitting to the proportions of this rarely seen luxury cruiser.  For the automotive trivia buffs, the Seville's "statement" styling was one of the last vehicles designed by Bill Mitchell.  Keeping things firmly grounded on all 4 corners are 14-inch wire wheel covers with a Cadillac centered metal badge, all wrapped in thin whitewall 205/75R15's from the 12th week of 2022.

Interior
Really nice padded and shiny Briar Brown leather is tucked and rolled and stitched to perfection to cover the door panels.  Seen on these is also the door pull which is mounted in lacquered wood, a litany of power toggles, (windows, locks, mirrors, and seats), and some wood appliqué surrounds.  Turning out attention to the passenger compartment is more rich shiny overstuffed leather which covers dual large front buckets, and a spacious bench in back.  These are finished in Briar Brown and are heavily tufted and buttoned, with the crescendo being the sewn in Cadillac crest in gold.  The original dash fronts the big seats and uses padded vinyl for the top and wood appliqué for the gauge cluster and cruise control, digital climate controls, AM/FM/Cassette radio with built in EQ, lights, and power antenna.  Clean brown carpet floods the floors, and above a nice headliner is wrapping around a functioning sunroof.  A note to the trunk which is lined with unbelievably clean brown carpeting!

Drivetrain
Within the expansive engine bay lives the original 4.1 Liter HT V8 sitting within a maze of wires and hoses.  This engine has EFI and a TH325-4L 4-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 3.15 geared front drive.  Our consignor notes that new belts, hoses, plugs, plug wires, a water pump, cap, rotors, and oxygen sensor have been recently installed to ensure reliability.

Undercarriage
Lots of patina, some road dirt, no rust and little to no leakage/seepage is seen on the bottom side.  The floor pans are solid and the frame is strong with no rust showing.  A cushy independent torsion bar suspension is on front, and an independent coil spring arrangement quell the motion on the rear.  As per the included build sheet, we also note the factory ride leveling suspension system.   Power disc brakes are all around with the fronts being new.

Drive-Ability
Getting into this car is literally like getting into it in the showroom in 1984.  It is in beautiful condition, starts right up rides like a dream, and all accessories are working just fine save for the power antenna and the fuel gauges reading higher than the actual tank level.  It has nice acceleration, and actually handles well for its mid-size ride.  The test track was no match for this car.

A nicely presenting car on the exterior with the paint and chrome, as well as the padded cloth top.  Interior shows well, with some wear but mostly nice.  The engine starts well and remains fairly clean and corrosion free.  Swing by our Hallowed Halls, plunk down your cash and see how the other half lives with Bill Mitchell's "statement" style.
