1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Pace Car

1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Pace Car

The Indianapolis 500 auto race has used a pace car every year since 1911.  The pace car is utilized for two primary purposes.  At the start of the race, the pace car leads the assembled starting grid around the track for a predetermined number of unscored warm-up laps.  Then if the officials deem appropriate, it releases the field at a purposeful speed to start the race.  Starting in the mid-1950s, the auto manufacturer who provided the official pace car started selling replica pace cars to the general public.  In many cases, the official on-track pace car was modified from its street-legal counterpart.  In addition, the track typically is provided with dozens of lower-end, ("base model"), pace car production replicas, (or different makes by the same manufacturer), for use as festival cars throughout the month.   Examples of this practice date back to the mid-1920s.

For consignment, a 1993 version of the  Indy pace car festival car which was number 68 of 125 provided for the year.  It was driven by a long time chief steward Tom Binford, to which there is an accompanying story and photo.  It sports the flag lot #68 emblem on it, and is well documented as to its usage in this 1993 festival.

Exterior
This debut year of the 4th generation Camaro was a drastic departure from the designs that preceded it.  It has an aggressive design with its bottom breathing front neoprene bumper, retains its rectangular dual horizontal headlights that have become iconic Camaro, a rakish front glass and a fully rounded rear.  This pace car replica/festival car has shiny black painted uppers, some snappy graphics on either side and a rainbow of colored striping delineating the top portion from the bottom  which is bathed in white.  These linear graphics explode near the doors back gap and create a flourish of color on the back end.  On the doors we note the Official Pace Car graphics with the date, as well as the Indy 500 badge on the front quarters.  This works in unison with the Z28 badge on the quarter lowers.  The roofline takes over from that rakish windscreen and curves over a removable smoked glass T-top and ascends and descends over for the anticipation of the rounded and curved greenhouse glass covering the back of the car.  This lands gently on a semicircular trunk deck which has a spoiler keeping the shape of the glass/trunk  line edge.   The rear roll pan sports the colored graphics and aero design tail lighting, which is nicely curved as well.  A wonderfully sculpted neoprene bumper in white is just below and gives the rear of the car a good grounding.   Some more graphics that relate to Indy in the form of a winged tire and a snappy race car graphic are on the upper sills of the doors.  16-inch white snowflake style wide spoked wheels are on, all wrapped in 245/50ZR16 rubber from 1993 making them the original tires.

Interior
A swing of the doors and more graphic design utilizes a faded black to white overspray effect for the doors uppers which works in unison with black plastic molding to form the armrest/door pull, housing for the window and lock toggles and lower storage area and speaker inset into the snappy design.   As I slip inside, I see more of the overspray face with the black in the edges and eventually moving over to the light or white side.  At this transition more of the multi colored linear graphics are within the seats and continue with the overspray transition right up to the headrests where they undulate within the design.  A back 2  plus 2 rear bench is in and is sans the colored linear graphics but still utilizes the overspray transition between black and white at the edges.  It looks airbrushed and is a very interesting effect that was done with a special 3d knitting method.  A molded black center console races past the front buckets and houses a glovebox, cupholder and the shifter with an ash receptacle in the front just before the dash.  As it rises to the center, it has an inset AM/FM/CD radio and temp turn knobs just above.  In front of the driver is the instrument cluster which is under a semi circular hood if you will forming the dash top.  Sweep gauges abound and are organized ergonomically so they are very easy to read.  The rally steering wheel fronts this dash and has an airbag.  The remainder of the dash keeps with the rounded sculpted look and is made up mostly of black molded plastic, vents and some knobs and pulls.  Black carpeting in very clean condition covers the floors and a shout out to the rear storage which is very large and is covered with gray felting with several hidden doors and flip ups to make the area very versatile.  There are even some holders for the T top stowage bags in the very back.  Noice!

Drivetrain
Under the hood in a very clean and nearly spotless engine bay sits a 5.7L LT-1 power plant.  It has EFI and a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission.  The rear axle weighs in at 10 belts and 3.23 gears.  All nicely presented and nearly factory condition.

Undercarriage
All like new with just some light dusting of surface rust on the rear axle, pumpkin, and brake casings.  All else is pure steel stamped for the floor pans and even some overspray is noted from the factory.  The unibody rails and seams are all excellent, tubs pristine, and a like new OEM exhaust snakes its way rearward where it splits into dual tips.  Front independent coil springs are on for the ride as well as a rear torque arm and coil spring setup for the back and power disc braking is on all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
She fired right upon and when inside I felt like I was sitting in a work of modern art.  All functions were working save for the CD player, and she handled and shifted like a fast rail car.  Bias free panic stopping and all is good with the performance and reliability with this example.

A documented verified and paperwork proven, all buttoned up version of the #68 out of 125 examples which were shipped to the 1993 Indy 500 and participated in the festivities.  The car has a tick over 2700 title verified original miles.  I imagine the 33 cars behind me getting ready to unleash and do the 500 miles in record time.  Gotta Love it!
