1989 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 Convertible

1989 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 Convertible

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet.  Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive.  Many versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America sold from the 1982 to 2005 model years, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico from the 2019 model year.

For consignment, a 1989 version of the Chevrolet Cavalier which is in Z24 trim.  It's a convertible, painted in arrest me red with silver lowers and rockers.  It has a new set of rubber, a new convertible top, new carpeting and an upgraded stereo system installed.

Exterior
This car is built upon a J body platform and has a sporty aero look to its exterior.  Inset headlamps with wrap around signal lights and parking lighting all in one line wrap around the front quarters.  A black egg crate grille with a red bow tie in the center and a neoprene bumper below showing off in red top and silver front chin area the sports dual opening for airflow.  A nice steeply raked front glass is framed in red with black trimming.  The black convertible top is new and moves up and down with a power switch.  The lower rockers of the car are in silver and have some aerodynamic flares to their bottom edges as well as the Z24 badging just fore of the rear wheel well.  This model has a 3 bar luggage rack  on the trunk lid that works to form a rear spoiler of sorts.  Another 2 tone red and silver rear bumper is just below a grid of tail lighting and back-up lights that stretch from side to side.  14-inch square cutout and square central hub design wheels are wrapped in 215/60R15 rubber which is like new.

Interior
As we venture inside we pass some suede-like broadcloth in gray upper panels and darker gray carpeted panels for the door's lowers.  Some square and rectangle design for the window toggles and door actuators as well as the armrest which is covered in smooth black vinyl and has an integrated door pull running on an angle vertically from the armrest.  Inside, more gray broadcloth with smooth bolsters and headrests in a warmer gray and inserts with tuck and roll horizontal ribbed pattern in a cooler gray tone cover the front bucket seats.  The matching rear bench stretches from side to side.  All this floats in sea of black carpeting which the consignor states is new.  A black plastic molded central console is racing through between the buckets and to the dash.  The factory dash is also square and rectangle design with sweep gauges in the center and some control panel buttons and toggles at the driver's fingertips while their hands are on the wheel.  In the center is a Sony LCD screen radio, and climate sliders above.  Seats are showing some slight “pilling” of the fabric but overall the interior remains nice for its age.

Drivetrain
The engine bay is original and unrestored showing some patina and fading of the surfaces in plastic.  The mill is in the form of a  2.8L v6 with EFI and a THM125 3-speed automatic transmission.  Driving the front tires is a 3.18 final drive ratio axle.  A stock exhaust is on.

Undercarriage
Underneath some patina on undercoated surfaces as well as light surface rust on some of the axles and minor areas of the stamped floor pans.  Independent Macpherson strut suspension is on front and coil springs are on the back.  Power disc braking is on front and power drums for the back.

Drive-Ability
This car starts right up and ideas smoothly.  On the test track she handles decently and has bias free braking for the panic stop.  Shifting was smooth from the automatic and the only fault I found was the AC blowing warm.

From the late 1980's a GM Z24 Cavalier, some faults in the paint, a new top and runs great.  What more could you want from a used car?
