1950 Crosley Hotshot Custom Roadster

1950 Crosley Hotshot Custom Roadster

The Crosley Hot Shot was the brainchild of Powel Crosley, a manufacturer of radios and refrigerators from Cincinnati, OH.  To the ones who know the small but yet mighty Crosley Hotshot was America's first real postwar sports car.  Today, while the Crosley name is familiar only with hardcore enthusiasts, back in the day the brothers were known for quite a few technical feats.  Crosley was the first to issue a Sport Utility Vehicle to the world, made the first all-steel station wagon, and was the first company to install four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes as standard equipment domestically.

Now that you are up to speed with our small history lesson, it's time you feast your eyes on this lovely 1950 Crosley Super Hotshot custom roadster we have today.  It has a custom fabricated fiberglass body, and a lightweight racing frame. Many modifications to its original looks, is signed by various race car drivers, and is a nifty piece of racing machinery.

Exterior
Looking nothing like its original that would have come from the factory, this is a fiberglass body, and is slightly modified from the original Crosley that graced America's winding back roads in the late 40's and early 50's.  It begins with an upside down teardrop shaped and chromed vertical ribbed grille and a single flanking circular headlight on either side of the hood.  These are now tucked into the space between the hood and side fenders which are nicely rounded and frame the front tires below.  Originally they appeared as bug eyes mounted to the front.  A simple single bar chromed bumper is on the bottom of the front end.  A rear hinged belted on hood is next in line and runs rearward in ever widening styling to the fire wall.   A high dual plastic with chromed steel framed curved windscreen is on and protects the driver and passenger from bugs.  No doors for this sports car, just climb in over the low swoops where the doors would be.  On the back in addition to the rounded rear wrap around fenders and we see a small rounded fin in the trunk's center.  It continues the curve downward where another simple chromed bumper is below.  On either side just below the mid door swoop is a small footrest to aid you in getting into this topless car.  For the tonneau cabin covering, its red vinyl matching the red exterior of the car.  12-inch steel wheels are in wrapped in 4.80-12 rubber with a central chromed moon cap on the steel wheels.

Interior
Red tweed textured broadcloth and nicely placed buttons covers the interior seating which shows as a full bench backed and bucket seated interior.  It has the hump running through the seat bottoms which are all covered in red carpeting, as are the toe kick areas of the interior.  Upfront, a beautiful chromed squashed oval instrument panel is in the center of a red dash front.  It contains a trio of Crosley Motors circular gauges which have a nifty retro look to them.  Some extra knobs and pulls are here as well.  On the left side a large red plastic steering wheel  with an interesting central horn hub in creme.  A long shift lever reaches from underneath the dash towards the driver.  The rear view mirror is mounted to the dash top and the cabin covering shows in red vinyl and all excellent snap on condition.

Drivetrain
Removing the hood reveals a 44.2ci Inline 4 cylinder engine.  It is beautifully restored and it has a Braje finned side plate and Braje valve coverings.  On top are dual 1-barrel Tillotson carburetors on top of a Braje dual 1-barrel intake manifold.  On the back is a 3-speed manual transmission with a 5.17 rear axle turning the tires.

Undercarriage
Light weight rust free steel framing is underneath along with rust free floor pans and other mechanicals.  For the suspension, it offers up transverse leaf springs on front, and quarter elliptical leaf springs for the rear.  4 wheel drum brakes is also noted.

A truly custom built racing car in the form of a Crosley Hotshot roadster.  It has Braje performance parts on the engine and good handling suspension.  A very neat little sports car.
