1987 Chevrolet IROC Z28

1987 Chevrolet IROC Z-28

A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race of Champions or IROC would pit all-star drivers from numerous venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars. Excepting the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet, and they chose to feature the Camaro.

This IROC version of the 1987 Camaro is in full IROC street garb. Special Painted badging, a low-slung windshield, some fairings, and a powerful 5.7 Liter tuned port fuel injection engine were just a few of the features that were added to this version of the Camaro only a 2-owner car with 13,233 consigner stated original miles.

Exterior
Maroon paint covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and spoiler of the car. A curved glass rear deck with louvers to help keep out some of the sun is seen on back. IROC Z in gold is seen on each door, as well as 5.7 L tuned port injection in gold on the front lower fender. Hood louvers and a removable smoked glass “T” top are present as well. Gold 5-spoked Camaro mags are attached to all 4 corners and noted as “front” and “rear” wheels because of different offsets. Underside of car is very clean, and presents as a 13,233 mile car

Interior
A snazzy two tone dark camel and light camel bucket seat configuration shows angled stitching in the middle panels on seat and back. This also holds true for the rear 2+2 seats. All leather is in very good condition. A menacing black console and dash, house all the critical instrumentation, as well as climate controls, radio and automatic shift lever. A flip top storage area is available which also doubles as a convenient arm rest. Cruise control, and power windows are installed. There is an interesting pre-digital mileage “counter” if you will that can be set for numerous important maintenance interval reminders and appointment date above the rear-view mirror in the center part of the “T” structure. Power locks, power steering, power brakes, power mirrors and a power driver's seat are working and are great conveniences with this sports car.

Drivetrain
The Tuned Port Injection 350ci "5.7L" engine gave a boost to 225 hp @ 4400 and 330ftlb @ 2800. This V8 engine received hydraulic roller lifters and new valve cover/head design. Valve covers feature new sealing and center bolts. Heads feature new raised lip for improved valve cover sealing. The two center intake bolts were changed from 90-degree orientation to 72 degrees. A TH700R4 automatic transmission is attached to the back of the mill. All this attached to an HD 7.75 inch 4 pinion rear end (denoted by 9 bolts). This rear axle configuration comes with tapered rather than straight roller bearings and a cone-clutch rather than disc-clutch limited slip unit. This IROC-Z features an upgraded suspension, lowered ride height, specially valved Delco-Bilstein shocks, larger diameter sway bars, a steering/frame brace known as the "wonder bar", a special decal package, and a Tuned Port Injection system taken from the Chevrolet Corvette.

Excepting the badging, this car is disguised as a mild mannered everyday 1987 Chevrolet Camaro. A look under the hood, as well as the IROC status, makes it anything but mild mannered. All in very good condition, this car is a definite goer, but can also be viewed at any car show you may want to drive it to.
