1962 Jaguar Mark II Saloon

1962 Jaguar Mark II Saloon

The word 'saloon' comes from the French 'salon', which means a large room.  The term 'saloon car' was originally used to refer to the luxury carriages on a train.  It was adopted by British carmakers in the early part of the 20th century to describe cars with an enclosed passenger compartment.

For consignment, a car often used by bank robbers or gangsters in jolly old England, and then eventually put to service by the “bobbies” due to its power and handling, a 1962 Jaguar MK II Saloon.  This was the beneficiary of a total rebuild several years ago, and still holds its shine and beauty.  And the interior leather smell is to die for!  Beautiful styling, a sporty sports car with a snappy engine, and cracking interior.  Bloody well right Grommit!

Exterior
The body styling looks like it could have been blown from a bubble machine as there is not a straight line on this car.  Leading with a leaper, it jumps just above an oval shaped vertical ribbed grille.  On either side are the larger round headlights and below are some circular fog lights showing slightly smaller.  On the lower corners of the bulbous front fenders is a small round signal light.  A nicely fitting bumper is below and has a small central bump to accommodate the bean shaped grille.  Front fenders round over and form the wheel wells and flank the V shaped hood.  This runs back to the curved oval windscreen with a straight bottom.  A thin A pillar and more oval styling is seen for the side glass and door sills.  This is a 4 door version, and the gaps are pretty well minded.  Bathed in a coating of Old English White, which is a respray, and has been expertly applied, looking like an A plus job.  A sill trimming runs from the front of the V shaped hood edges rearward across the door sills then dives downward to the rear quarter edges and eventually the rear of the car.  Here a large tail light resides just above another shiny wrap around bumper.  The trunk lid is curved and has a large plate light above.  Like new restored chrome wire wheels with knockoff hubs shiny brightly.  The knockoffs are showing some chrome peeling off and may not have been restored.  White wall rubber surrounds these classy wheels and the car is looking very fashionable.

Interior
Inside are just perfect overstuffed bomber styled buckets wrapped in beautiful barley, (beige), hides.  These seats are pure perfection and this interior smells of quality leather…breathe it in!  They present with tuck and roll inserts and wide smooth bolsters with chromed moon caps seat hinge coverings and a lock lever.  In back, a perfectly matching bench is installed and stretches from door to door.  The door panels are also beautiful tight leather panels.  Up front, an exquisite highly lacquered burl dash top and front holds 2 large blackface circular Smith's gauges.  A few other rounds are just to drivers left.  In the center is a black panel within the burl and here we see a top lineup of water, oil, fuel, and amps along with the lighting turn lever.  Below are a plethora of various toggles, pulls, and the ignition key turn.  More burl for the passengers side, all beautifully preserved and highly shiny in their open use of wood panels and edging.  An overstuffed central console is in and resides between the seats.  The delicate original steering wheel is fronting this dash and this car's interior just bleeds expensive and high end.  Perfectly clean carpeting is below in tan and above is a tight tufted fuzzy broadcloth tan headliner.  Onward Jeebs…

Drivetrain
Under the bonnet is a silver single snouted air cleaner veering out to the driver's side.  This tops a silver engine and valve covering.  All buttoned up is a 3.8L DOHC inline 6 cylinder mill with 2 SU carbs, (H6D's), and a Borg Warner 3 Speed/Detroit Autogear automatic transmission.  Power goes to a rear axle of 3.54 gearing.  Not unlike the rest of the car, plenty of attention to detail was paid on this engine bay restoration.

Undercarriage
I say looking mostly chipper underneath with no surface rust and solid steel stamped floor pans and framing.  Independent coil springs in front, and quarter elliptical leaf springs on back provide the ride, and disc braking on all 4 corners is on.  Also seen is a very clean and like new exhaust.

Drive-Ability
As with all the British cars I snapped this one up for the test drive, and it was a fulfilling experience.  The barley leather grabbed me and I turned the key and off to the test track for my tool I went.  Nice smooth acceleration and plenty of it, good solid braking, and shifting was seamless.  This car is just beautiful and a real looker and head turner.

In the: “and now for something completely different” category, a snappy rounded design Jag from 1962 that runs great and is a great looker, all bathed in Old English White with fabulous chrome.  Quite right, you're bloody well right to snap this stylish early 60's roadster up.  Come in and pluck this Limey from our Hallowed Halls.
