1910 Maxwell Series AA Runabout

1910 Maxwell Series AA Runabout

Jonathan Maxwell had worked at both Olds Motor Works and Detroit's Northern Manufacturing Company.  A trained machinist and engineer, he was invited to join industrialist Benjamin Briscoe in a new automotive venture in 1904.  Leaving the Motor City, they took over the factory of the Mobile Company of America, a defunct steam-car manufacturer, at Tarrytown, New York.  John D. Rockefeller provided most of the start-up capital for the Maxwell-Briscoe Motor Company.

In 1910 the 10hp Maxwell Model A evolved into the 11 hp AA, gaining four inches of wheelbase in the process.  A quality restoration, this car presents well in red with black fenders and broad accent striping.  In an era when cars were still more like carriages, this car presents as such and in excellent restored condition.  A convertible top gives you the option to drive in bad weather, and acetylene lamps give you light to travel at night, not often done in 1910.  Our consignment is a real fully restored piece of early motoring history.

Exterior
Beautifully preserved steel painted in snappy red makes up the pinstriped bodywork of this early automobile.  An abundance of brass is on from the radiator surround to the lighting, a horn, and on back for a tail light.  The lighting comprises a Maxwell No. 4 script brass tail lamp and No. 27 acetylene headlamps, fueled by a carbide generator on the left running board.  Black painted undulating fenders hang off of either side and have a painted white pinstripe to accentuate their shape.  A cowled hood, firewall and no door design, the exterior shows nicely curved metal seat surrounds on top of a styled box if you will.  On back, is a metal trunk which contains all the original tools badged Maxwell, and some extra covers.  On top is a nice black canvas convertible top which moves up and down with ease.  On the driver's running board is a tank for the acetylene gas to power the lighting on the exterior.  Beautiful 28-inch wood spoked wheels painted red with some white pin striping and brass hubs are wrapped in like new 28x3 rubber.

Interior
Simple but beautiful harkening back to the carriage days, the seat is upholstered in diamond-pattern black buttoned leather.  It has dual curves for the back supports and padded rounded over seats.  A long wood rimmed steering wheel with brass spokes reaches for the driver via a metal red painted column.  It fronts a full red painted metal dashboard which houses what looks like the control panel for a furnace rather than a car.  It has brass gauges with white face dials, one of which is an eight-day jeweled-movement clock the other the speedometer.  Also a trio of glass bottles in a holder for oiling various components under the hood.  A square dovetailed varnished wood box resides here as well and covers the mechanicals for the spark advance.  Rubber square pattern flooring is on the floors and remains very clean with a few pedals to drive this complex machine.

Drivetrain
Lifting the cowled hood and we see a horizontally opposed 2 cylinder engine to power this car.  It shows open valve springs and a front mounted flywheel for all the world to see.  Ignited with a Splitdorf ignition system, it fires right up.  It is a 100.3ci in size, and produces 11hp.  A 1-barrel carburetor feeds it fuel, and a 2-speed planetary transmission is also on.  All very nicely restored and running well.

Undercarriage
Also wonderfully restored presenting in all red with black painted oak wood floor boards  Buggy spring suspension fore and aft is in red and looking solid and mechanical drum brakes are on back only.

Drive-Ability
Following a complex series of events and directions this car runs nicely and is definitely all workable and drivable,  It is a crank starter so be careful, but it's only a 2 cylinder so there is not too much risk of breaking your arm.  Complete functionality right down to the gas lights.

A natural for one and two-cylinder tours, this is an archetypal Maxwell from the company's earliest years.  Compared to the Model T which makes the Lizzy look like a Yugo!  A perfectly restored example ready to go and show.
