1927 Chevrolet Capitol Pickup

1927 Chevrolet Capitol Pickup

In the latter part of 1926 Chevrolet was gearing up to make some changes due to information they had about the eventual launch of the new Ford Model A to replace the Model T that was on an 18 year run. They changed the name of their Superior V model to the Capitol AA coupe and roadster, which was a smaller car, soft top, and rumble seat. A compact car per se.

Ahhh, the pickup truck, the workhorse of the automotive world. Meant to assist with getting the job done and be a daily performer to be relied upon. This consignment is a 1927 Chevrolet Capitol pickup truck and presents in barn find condition.

Exterior
Steel panels that do not have very much invasive rust on them, but have years of aging outside with faded paint, some surface rusting along with a few areas of invasive rust, and areas of rub off for the panels. All black, the gaps need attention, as do the fenders which are nicely curved around the 20-inch wooden spoke wheels, but have plenty of dents, cracks and dings to deal with. The front of the car has a cowled hood and a blacked out radiator surround, that currently is faded, dimpled, and very dulled. This is the same for the headlights flanking either side of the radiator that are supported on the outside by the front fenders, dulled trim rings and patina black shells. The passenger compartment is a squared off with steel over a wood structure that has the windscreen in front and full doors on either side, and I can't get enough of the half moon windows in the rear sides of the cab The wood constructed roof shows with a gentle slant forward, giving a bit of an aerodynamic look to this hauler, but also in need of major restoration. On the back is the shallow steel bed with its slab steel sides, outward canted tops and wood bed, all needing restoration.

Interior
The door panels have been ravaged by time and allow us to view the wooden substructure of the doors. These are showing with heavy wood rot and will need to be replaced. A former bench seat sits nicely within the small cabin and shows its underlying springs, framing, and bits of leather coverings. The dash is faded, rusted, and painted black. It has the standard center round speedometer and odometer flanked on either side by oval gauges and knobs and a dash light above. The floors have a combination of wood and original metal that is showing some invasive rust throughout.

Drivetrain
Under the unrestored cowled hood within the surface rusted engine bay is a 171ci inline 4-cylinder. It has a 1-barrel carburetor and a 4-speed manual transmission on the back. The rear axle is of the 2-speed variety.

Undercarriage
A fairly heavy coating of surface rust abounds on all the underside parts, but no invasive rust is noted. Leaf springs are on all 4 corners and mechanical drums are on both the front and rear.

So, we have a neat looking truck design in search of an ambitious restorer that can bring this back from its years of neglect. The basics are all here; one just needs to put a bit of sweat equity to make it a showpiece. A diamond in the rough.
