1953 Farmall Super A Tractor

1953 Farmall Super A Tractor

Farmall was a model name and later a brand name for tractors manufactured by International Harvester, an American truck, tractor, and construction equipment company. The Farmall name was usually presented as McCormick-Deering Farmall and later McCormick Farmall in the evolving brand architecture of IH. Farmall was a prominent brand in the 20th-century trend toward the mechanization of agriculture in the US. Its general-purpose machines' origins were in row-crop tractors, a category that they helped establish and in which they long held a large market share. During the decades of Farmall production, (1920s to 1980s), most Farmalls were built for row-crop work, but many orchards, fairways, and other variants were also built. Most Farmalls were all-purpose tractors that were affordable for small to medium-sized family farms and could do enough of the tasks needed on the farm that the need for hired hands was reduced and for working horses or mules eliminated.

For consignment, a barn find condition, end of the model run in the form of a 1953 Farmall Super H. This unit is holding its original 119ci 4 cylinder, 4 speed manual transmission and is just begging to be brought back to life. Our trained eyes tell us this example is complete with the exception of the 6 volt battery so reviving it to have plenty of power to plow or turning it into a museum quality piece should be a fairly straightforward task

Exterior
Bathed in traditional Farmall red that has faded and developed surface rust, scratches and scrapes on nearly every panel, this tractor is prime for restoring. Farmall lettering in white is present but has faded and become rife with rust staining. Meanwhile the cowl-less engine bay reveals the engine and gives the owner the ability to do some wrenching. A front spread wheel setup gives much better stability than a row crop tractor. Regardless, caution must be taken as not to crush any precious plants or errant farmhands. Red painted patina riddled wheels are wrapped in 5.00-16 tractor front tires, and with the lack of front suspension slow speeds are encouraged. As we move back, the farmers seat area has all the controls within arms reach including a centrally mounted steering wheel, simple ampere gauge, and a few knobs and pulls. To the left is the shifter and to the left and right of the seat are various levers for controls, meanwhile brake control pedals are on the right but down low. Large curved fenders protect the driver from the rear Vee treaded 9.00-24 tires along with more large red painted patina riddled wheels. A single industrial spot light is noted on the rear, along with the PTO and hitch assembly. All of the pedals and controls move freely, and steering can turn the wheels with the best of them.

Drivetrain
A liquid cooled 4 stroke gasoline engine sits under the cowl and shows in 119ci format making 19hp. The transmission is the original 4-speed manual. Everything is present and accounted for, even down to the 6 volt electric starter.

A ready to be restored to a museum quality piece, yard art, or some great promotional fodder here. Real farming history from the middle of the era when the competition was fierce, and loyalty among farmers was even greater.
