1972 Pontiac LeMans Hardtop

1972 Pontiac LeMans Hardtop

When it comes to Pontiac, the brand's most famous cars that have established a place for themselves on the market include the Firebird, the GTO, and the Bonneville.  As the public considers these rides classics worthy of every collector's collection today, their prices continue to surge.  But, there are other collectible classics of this brand deserving every bit of praise and attention, yet they have been a little overshadowed throughout the years. The Pontiac LeMans is one of them.  This lineup from the '60s birthed some handsome rides until the '90s when the production ended with the sixth generation.

First introduced in 1961 the LeMans named for the famous endurance race in France, evolved over the years.  For consignment, we give you a powerful, all buttoned up piece of automotive black cherry chocolate.  A 1972 Pontiac LeMans with the GTO dressings.  It's the beneficiary of a complete restoration about 5 years ago.  Now with a small block Chevrolet 383ci V8 stroker, RHS aluminum heads, a shift kit, a Ram Air hood to allow this healthy mill to breathe in easier, its “beaked” front end, tinted glass and 17-inch Retro wheels, it is quite the 'looker” and is a definite “cooker”  Read on!

Exterior
Dual headlights and the iconic beaked front end central vertical bar grille lead the way.  Looking much like the foreword, it has a sporty dual headlight setup and some round signal lights on the front chin.  A dual opening Ram Airhood, and some shiny bezels, rocker trimmings and window surrounds break up all that delicious black cherry paint which has been expertly applied.   A slight coke bottle design uses a mid body side crease to add some shape as well.  On the sides of the front quarters are a trio of small vertical side vents.  Wheel well trimmings accentuate the lines and these include a magnificent sloping rear glass and trunk deck.  This drops down and seamlessly melts into the rear bumper which houses the horizontal tail lights, keeping the design very clean.  Dual exhaust pipes peek out from under the rear roll pan, and the paint is one you cannot go wrong with in this writer's opinion.  Very sparkly 17-inch Retro 5 spoke wheels are wrapped in 235/45ZR17's in front and big 275/40ZR17 on back all from the 18th week of 2015.  Mmmm mmmmmm goood!

Interior
There is definitely a competition going on with the exterior and interior, where we note black vinyl door panels with some horizontal tuck and roll, lower ribbing and some shiny actuators and cranks.  Inside, a beautifully preserved crack free black vinyl tuck and roll inserted split bench in front and full on bench is in back for the seating.  The dash is in a black molded lazy Vee shaped front with some wood appliqué inserts for the instruments.  These are circular and include an aftermarket AutoMeter tach, speedo and a quad of supporting gauges.  In dash central are more round aftermarket gauges to give more accurate reading of the cars pulse of water temp, oil pressure and volts.  Below this trio are the temp sliders and a factory radio.  The remainder of the dash is the molded plastic/vinyl and is nice and shiny and crack free.  Black carpeting with rubber protective mats are inside and above is a tight black vinyl headliner.

Drivetrain
Under the dual scooped hood is a powerful 383ci V8 small block Chevrolet stroker mill.  It has RHS aluminum heads and a single 4-barrel carburetor feeding it fossils and O2.  A TH350 3 speed automatic transmission is on the back and it has a shift kit installed.  The rear axle weighs in at 10 bolts and 3.31 gears.  Headers and a Flowmaster exhaust are on so the car can breathe easier, as can you!  Plenty of braided stainless hoses and no corrosion for the master cylinder or anywhere else for that matter.

Undercarriage
Some slight patina, road splatter and otherwise all black painted rust free steel and structure.  It has an H pipe exhaust, a like new fuel tank and the floor pans are excellent.  The front suspension goes with independent coil springs and the rear a 4 link with coil springs.  Power disc brakes are in front and power drums on the back.

Drive-Ability
My “crack” decoder and Motörhead took this beauty for a ride and came back with a smile on his face and black cherry chocolate dripping from the side of his mouth!  He reported being impressed with the power, handling, and all aspects of his test drive which he refused to say how fast he went, but based on his smile it was faster then I would have gone!  The power steering and power brakes were working just great but the majority of the AC system has been removed, so keep those tinted windows down and not only look but stay kewl.

Just a great souped up example of this otherwise “sleeper” grocery getter car, which has long since left the building on this black cherry example.  A beautifully done restoration with a hot engine and snappy interior, all ready to turn the key and go…like hell!  O consignor states original wheels and raised white letter tires can also be negotiated with this car if ya want 'em.
