1987 Pontiac Fiero GT

1987 Pontiac Fiero GT

From the Spanish word the “fierce one,” Fiero was introduced to the American market in 1984 as a gas saving alternative to the Corvette.  A mid-engine 2 seater sports car that had all the initial problems sorted out by the last year of offering it to the public in 1988.  The suspension had been upgraded, and the GT version came as a 6 cylinder 2.8 liter with Getrag 5-speed transmission, making the car finally what the designers wanted it to be, a somewhat powerful, good handling mid engined car, that got good gas mileage.

For consignment, a 1987 version of the “Fierce One” and this car lives up to its name as it has a 350ci V8 in its midst, with tuned port injection and a Getrag 5-speed transmission.  It presents nicely and it was driven from South Dakota to its new home in PA, as well as taken to Florida this past year.  Its a runner, and a stunner, and a definite E ticket ride right out of 1987

Exterior
Pontiac got it right in competing with the Corvette but beat them to the punch by decades with the mid engine concept.  The aerodynamic look persists with the hidden headlights with LED lamps and rebuilt motors, neoprene integrated bumpers, small air duct on rear quarter, and a spoiler atop the rear deck.  All is bathed in Bright Blue Metallic, a not oft seen factory color.  There are a few chip offs throughout where the car has encountered a stone or two while at high speed!  A low and sporty design, featuring a smoked glass removable T top, deep rear B pillar flying buttresses and rear smoked glass within those buttresses.  On the rear deck some black cooling venting panels flank the rear “trunk” which is actually the hood to reveal the mid-mounted engine.  An aero rear smoked glass panel houses the tail lights and rear badge which stretches across the back of the sports car.  Dual outlet exhausts peek out from the rear roll pan and this handler rolls on 17-inch Enkei multi spoke mag wheels wrapped in 215/45ZR17's in front and slightly larger 235/40ZR17's in back.  A good looker.

Interior
Making use of various shades of gray on the door panels, we see heavy use of the design of the era in the form of square and rectangle design. This is just a taste of things to come on the interior and all its fairly clean and not worn.  Inside these materials play out beautifully with the styled high back buckets with smooth black leather, and showing in in excellent condition.  A two tone squared up central console races up to the square and rectangle design dash, all in shades of gray and black.  Multiple usage of stacked square and rectangle design gives the dash a custom look and makes viewing the instruments and controls a breeze.  The dash front utilizes carbon fiber as do the fronts for the center which includes an AM/FM radio inserted and climate controls which are push button controlled.  On top are a duo of rectangular gauges to include battery voltage and oil pressure.  A few toggles pepper the dash as well, and below nice gray neutral carpeting floods the floors.  Also a shout out to that center console which aft of the drivers and passengers chairs rises upward to make more storage for the folks inside.  Everything inside is nicely preserved and very clean.

Drivetrain
Midway through this car is the horizontally opposed 350ci V8 now replacing the factory engine.  It has Tuned Port EFI and a Getrag 5-speed to spin the rear tires, along with a 3.61 final drive.  A custom stainless exhaust system is now replacing a stock one, and this makes the car sound radical!

Undercarriage
The hits just keep on coming for the undercarriage with solid steel floor pans and unibody construction which shows slight patina.  There is a stronghold of newer parts, (fuel filter, exhaust, brakes and shocks).  No rust seen, and full independent suspension with the rear lowered by coil overs is on all 4 corners.   Power disc braking is on all 4 corners, and as noted that stainless steel exhaust is labeled Magnaflow.

Drive-Ability
Hopping in I felt like I was in the lap of luxury with the leather grabbing my body and getting the seats adjusted to be just right baby bear.  She fired right up and the 350 cubes just growled at me.  Off to the test track where it performed with nice acceleration, solid braking and gave me a rail-like handling ride.  All functions were working swimmingly for this blue beauty, and even the headlights went up and down as they have new motors installed.  I noticed the AC has been disconnected.

The beneficiary of an engine upgrade, diligent maintenance, and plenty of TLC given to this performer which was initially produced to give the Corvette a run for its money, and this example definitely does!  Hold ON.
