1990 Ford Bronco II

1990 Ford Bronco II

The Ford Bronco is a model line of sport utility vehicles manufactured and marketed by Ford.  The first SUV model developed by the company, five generations of the Bronco were sold from the 1966 to 1996 model years.  A sixth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2021 model year.  The nameplate has been used on other Ford SUVs, namely the 1984–1990 Bronco II compact SUV and the 2021 Bronco Sport compact crossover.  Originally developed as a compact off-road vehicle using its own chassis, the Bronco initially competed against the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout.  For 1978, Ford enlarged the Bronco, making it a short-wheelbase version of the F-Series pickup truck; the full-size Bronco competed against the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and Dodge Ram-charger.

For consignment, the 1990 version of the Bronco II, bathed in a respray of Cabernet red and Colonial White two tone, sporting panorama wrap around the top rear tinted glass, a fiberglass front visor, and a full access tailgate, grab your groover and off to the Alps for a climb.  Climb every mountain. search high and low, follow every highway, every path you know.

Exterior
All straight steel is neatly put together in square and rectangle format, minding its gapping, and is all bathed in a respray of Cabernet Red topping and bottoming Colonial White.  A nice front shiny grille with bumper below and very slightly fogged rectangular headlights lead the way with the blue oval center badging is all on and looking factory.  A walk around will have you hyped up on the height to give you visions of sugarplums and wild out of the way places you can get away to.  This generation, with its somewhat massaged squared off design and long wheelbase, has chromed large mirrors hanging off of each door.  A fiberglass visor shades the dash, and a swing up fiberglass rear gate offers up all access to the back storage area.  15-inch drilled and multiple bolted edged shiny wheels are on all corners and are wrapped in 235/75R15's all from the 18th week of 2021.  The hills are alive, with the sound of Broncos!

Interior
Climbing inside I'm two toned gray with envy greeted with door panels bathed in 50 shades of gray, (shoot I forgot my safe word. but I digress..), and a highlighting panel of light gray broadcloth pattern, surrounded by  molded vinyl and plastic.  Power window toggles are seen and a lower door storage unit is also molded in and covered on the lowers with the interior neutral gray carpeting.  The seats are shown with broadcloth inserts in various shades of colored ribbed gray, and surrounded by gray padded bolsters.  The driver's seat has a hole in the side due to wear from access and egress.  The dash has a well preserved gray pad, and is nicely surrounded by wood appliqué and black insert panels to house the instruments.  Some of the wood is rounded over, and is also seen and in front is a factory padded steering wheel slightly worn and in all black.  In the center of the buckets is a large console with a storage box/padded armrest, and drink holder.  Slightly soiled gray carpeting is installed and the headliner is tight.  It has a sunroof above the front passengers.  In back is a  60/40 split back bench which can be folded down for extra gear storage.  A small cargo area is carpeting covered and slightly soiled in the way back.  But Captain Von Trapp, whistling is for dogs…

Drivetrain
Under the hood is the original 2.9 liter V6 with EFI fuel delivery.   There is an A4LD 4-speed automatic transmission which pushes power rearward to a Ford 7.5 inch rear axle.  Some dust and slight dirt along with minor surface rust are noted in this unrestored but nice engine bay.

Undercarriage
Underneath we note some surface rusting that has started to take up residence on the framing surfaces, however the structure is unaffected.  The framing is sound and all the mechanicals are working just fine.  Noted is radius arm and coil springs for the front suspension, and leaf springs for the rear.  Power disc brakes are on front and power drums for the rear.  A solid stock exhaust is installed and seen with no rust.

Drive-Ability
This truck started right up and we began our climb, (sic), to the test track.  Here it worked as it should with good acceleration, and decent handling.  Brakes are good and should be as they are fairly new according to the consigner.  All electronics were working just fine, and a recent PA inspection and fresh oil change has been performed.  I have personally experienced driving one of these in the hinterlands of BLM in Utah, and we could not destroy it.  One can assume this truck has the same toughness, as it is of the same vintage.  We were crawling around red rock territory, climbing things that put fear into my heart, especially when you are looking towards the sky but still moving forward!

This truck is a very nice example, with sporty wheels, big tires and a nice gray striped graphics for the early 90's motif interior in broadcloth.  Storage in the back, nice ride height, and room for 5, go on git out there into the wilds of the great USA.  Get a little mud on dem tires.  I'm Friedrich. I'm 14 and I'm Impossible!
