1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS SS Convertible

1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS Convertible

The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro appeared in Chevrolet dealerships in September 1966 for the 1967 model year on a brand-new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and was available as a 2-door, 2+2 seat, hardtop, (no "B" or center pillar), or convertible, with the choice of either a straight-six or V8 engine. The first-generation Camaro was built through the 1969 model year.

This 67 RS/SS Camaro Convertible for consignment, as we can see, had undergone a restoration and kept true to the trim tag and the original configuration, sporting the all important 4P accessory code on the Fisher body tag.  The body and frame have been kept OEM but a color change was performed for the convertible top along with a change to a later model powerplant from original.  Nonetheless, this example has been treated to an extensive detailing for the upcoming show season and being one of the 18,856 purported V8 Camaro convertibles built for the introductory model year.

Exterior
A respray of the correct Marina Blue with basecoat and clearcoat give this 1st year 1st generation Camaro some extra zest, and it shines like a crazy diamond.  Very nice paint with only a few minor inclusions and imperfections, but nothing truly noteworthy, is on this well-done steel body.  This car also carries the RS package, consisting of hidden headlights and RS specific tail light bezels, (the all-important Z22 RPO code).  A white wrap around nose stripe leads the way and gives way to a correct hood sporting highly polished chrome louver stacks for a little extra pizazz and the rocker chrome, and wheel well surround trim is excellent as are the crossed flag 350 fender badges.  The small bumpers are also excellent and grace the front and rear of the car.  On all 4 corners are 14 and 15" deep dish rally wheels wrapped by raised white letter sidewall tires, correct for the period but updated.  We also need to mention the small but sexy front and rear spoilers, the front hovering below the bumper and SS 350 badged grille and the rear floating above the trunk, (actually it's attached).  And all of this wouldn't be complete without the power actuated near flawless white canvas convertible top with its crystal clear plastic rear window.

Interior
I'm breaking protocol and starting with the trunk which you have to see to believe.  All wrapped in green and black houndstooth vinyl it displays neatly.  Now we can move to the meat and potatoes of the interior…the passenger compartment.  Swinging the doors, we are greeted with excellence.  Excellent door panels in black highlighted by chrome strips, vertical stitching and square embossments look just fab.  Turning our attention inward we are greeted by a pair of low back buckets with smooth black vinyl bolsters and wide white striping to delineate the change to the tuck and roll inserts.  In the back is a fixed position bench in matching material which looks to hardly have been used.  All of this floats above clean black carpeting with a T-handle shifter growing from the black plastic chrome trimmed console.  As we move to the dash there are 3 gauges hanging below the dash, these monitor oil psi, volts, water temp, fuel level and even hold a clock.  Moving up the angled inward dash in black, there are a few chromed knobs and dual deep dish round gauges framed by an original 3 spoke steering wheel, all just in peachy condition, actually it's all black.  Noted in the gauge cluster is a factory tachometer so you can avoid the red zone.

Drivetrain
Lifting the louvered hood we are met with a well restored engine bay holding in its confines a black painted 350ci V8 which is not original to this car.  A black painted GM intake manifold and 4-barrel carburetor are on to handle the air and fossil intake and feed the mixture down to a pair of aluminum cylinder heads.  Dressing up this powerful V8 is a chrome air cleaner assembly and black valve coverings.  Bolted to the back of this mill is a non-original TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and handling the power at the tail end is a 12-bolt conventional rear axle with 3.31 gearing.

Undercarriage
Underneath we are met with black as far as the eye can see.  We note only minor surface rust and some road dirt on the suspension components which come in independent coil spring form for the front and a leaf spring configuration for the rear.  The correct factory passenger side traction bar is missing in action but easily replaceable.  Power drum brakes are seen all around and a dual exhaust system with headers and Flowmaster mufflers are seen all in good condition.

Drive-Ability
Lights quickly, and just listening to the exhaust sound of the idle, you know you are in for a ride.  This car does not disappoint, as it runs like a deer, stings like a bee, and handles like a butterfly, all while looking great and turning heads with the top up or down.  It has to be a female car, because it can do more than one thing at once…but I digress, and back to the wonderful handling, ride, and acceleration.  She is just a great driver whose power goes on longer than our test area and nary a frown was to be noted.  And for the color, I tend to disagree with Old Blue Eyes...blue, not orange, is the happiest color.

A generation 1 first year pony car, completely restored, with an RS option package, SS350 package, as well as some great factory options.  All surfaces for interior and exterior are good to go, and in good working condition and in all its upgraded restored glory, we have a really nice first year Camaro on our hands.  All working, all nicely attended to, and all muscle waiting for you in our overstuffed Hallowed Halls.
