1975 Pontiac LeMans Sedan

1975 Pontiac LeMans Sedan

From 1973 to 1977, the LeMans and other GM intermediates were much larger in size than previous models due to evolutionary changes that resulted in larger cars year after year and federally mandated 5 mph crash bumpers that added weight and length.  During this period, Pontiac's intermediate lineup included the base LeMans, LeMans Sport Coupe, GTO (1973 only), Luxury LeMans (became the Grand LeMans in 1975), the Euro-styled Grand Am from 1973 to 1975, and the 1977 Can Am.  Body styles were all based on GM's Colonnade hardtop design for both sedans and coupes, (no convertibles were offered after 1972), that included center pillars for improved rollover safety standards but eliminated true hardtop design, along with frameless windows similar to a hardtop.  Two-door coupes featured triangular "fixed" rear side windows that did not open, which were covered with louvers on the LeMans and GTO sport coupes, and the new Grand Am coupe.

This 1975 LeMans, along with all other GM intermediates, was in year 3 of the new from the ground up but retained the same wheelbase lengths of 112 inches for two-door coupes, and 116 inches for four-door sedans and station wagons.  All models featured the federally mandated 5-mile-per-hour front bumpers along with single headlights.  Handling capabilities were greatly improved on all models due to new front-suspension components shared with the F-body Pontiac Firebird and Chevrolet Camaro, improved rear-coil suspension and bias-belted tires.  Our example is a consignor stated, one owner car, with a single repaint and remaining very original down to the plastic covers over the seats and sun visors.  Clearly always garage kept, it remains in very good condition with its factory shipping record and owners manuals.  Now showing 53,218 miles, although not verifiable as the title is listed as mileage exempt.  Regardless of that status, one look will tell you the miles are actual and this ride has been pampered.

Exterior
A single respray of Cameo White bathes the stylized body panels that are rust free and mostly devoid of any faults, save for a dent or two which are minor.  Gaps are well minded on the steel slabs throughout and a full blue vinyl top with triangulated rear quarter windows with no rust underneath is covering the roof.  From its sleek front throwback style Pontiac beak to its pinched design rear it remains sporty and shiny with its accenting chrome.  A stainless and black rubber strip graces the lower beltline and for some extra snazzy appearance we note the addition of rear fender skirts, why aren't these still a thing?  A deviation from the factory shipping record is the change from 15-inch Pontiac Rally 2 wheels to standard 15-inch steel wheels with full luxury wheel covers on all 4 corners and all is looking great on this mid-year Colonnade bodystyle.

Interior
In contrast and as a compliment to the exterior Cameo White, the interior is bathed in Dark Blue colored vinyl, wood appliqué and chrome trimming.  The door panels are near perfect and in plenty of the blue with a peppering of chrome knobs and actuators with some wood accenting appliqué.  Inside seating is just beautiful with all tuck and roll vertical pattern blue vinyl, split bench seat up front and full bench in the rear.  These have lasted the test of time thanks in part to the clear, almost bubble wrap like seat covers that most likely were installed when the car was new.  A square and rectangle design dash is up front and here we see more molded vinyl and plastic in blue along with some very clean instruments in a blue field and a lower band of wood appliqué.  An original steering wheel is fronting the dash, blue carpeting is flooding the floors, and a blue vinyl headliner is above with more protection on the sun visors.  Niiiiiice!

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a shiny detailed and well-kept 350ci Pontiac V8 engine.  There is a single 2-barrel carburetor atop, and a TH350 3-speed automatic on back.  The rear axle weighs in as a 10-bolt 2.56 gear ratio setup.  All is nice and shiny under here with nice corrosion free bolt ons throughout.

Undercarriage
With only 53K miles showing on the clock the undercarriage is definitely rust free with solid floor pans and frame construction and only a light patina of surface rust on the untreated components.  A nice even undercoating covers most surfaces.  Independent coil springs for the front and a 4 link with coil springs on back.  Power disc brakes on front and power drums for the rear can be noted when looking underneath.  A nice factory style single exhaust makes its way from front to rear also.

Drive-Ability
This car started and ran like it was new and looks the part too.  All functions were working well, and it performed as it should on the test track.  Nice acceleration, good bias free braking, smooth comfy cruise, and I'm in love with the protective seat covers.

Ready to go out and win nearly any AACA badge you want to shoot for, you know you are in rarefied air with this lower mileage cream puff, preserved very nicely from 1975.  The colors are just right, the options are really nice, and all is good baby bear.
