1966 Chevrolet Nova SS Clone

For decades much of the classic car world has been broken down into two distinct schools of thought: those who believe automobiles should be kept or restored to as original as possible, and those who are willing to mix-and-match drivetrains, trim, and features from a specific era in order to create the vehicle they want to drive.  It's important to mention that the second group doesn't refer to restomods, or the modernization of classic metal.  Rather, it's composed of owners who have no qualms about taking a regular Nova coupe and transforming it into an SS.  The practice is called 'cloning,' and it's been a part of the collector car landscape for as long as the hobby has existed.

Minimalistic with maximum function, thrift, not revolutionary in concept or execution, a compact grocery getter, pick the kids up kinda car, here in our Hallowed Halls.  It is so pedestrian you would walk by it and never notice it.  However, this does not detract from its charm, and the fact that it was once a grocery getter.  Purchased by our consignor from a dealership in Indiana and with little else known, it's time I get to quote my favorite TV detective Joe Friday in truncated form..."just the facts, ma'am". 

Exterior
With a respray in the menacing deep dark Tuxedo Black, is there any other color?, which bathes laser straight steel that has near perfect gaps but is not without a few inclusions and sanding scratches.  It's definitely the deep end of the pool when it comes to looking at this car.  Now badged with Super Sport badging, tinted windows, and nicely preserved chrome trimmings all is looking just fine.  The car has a strong stance and looking it over one can sense that it is as solid as can be throughout and this stance is accentuated by the low rise cowl induction hood and chrome finished 17-inch US Mag wheels and staggered width blackwall rubber for this simple but elegantly functional design car from the mid 1960's.  Clean chrome makes up both bumpers and more chrome is used for trimming on the egg crate grille, emblems, handles and driver's door mirror.  The stainless trimmings, used on the wheel wells, rockers and surrounding the glass also hold a mirror like shine.  More stainless makes an appearance highlighting the full black vinyl roof, which adds an air of class to this tuxedo draped muscle. 

Interior
With both front buckets and rear bench seat in nice black vinyl we are given a glimpse into the originality of the factory seating design and setup.  These seats float in a sea of black new carpet.  A tight front dash with original instrumentation shows also in black.   This presents as very clean and very simple and has a 3 spoke black rimmed steering wheel in front of it.  Also, a later model aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette stereo is in the center along with some aftermarket gauges hanging off of the bottom of the dash.  A B&M ratchet shifter sits proudly atop the consoless carpeted hump and provides fast positive shifting for those less than legal late night drags.  The trunk has speckle paint with a straight flat plaid rubber mat in the center supporting the relocated battery.  Plenty of attention to detail on this consignment.

Drivetrain
Getting to the heart of the matter and why we can use the word “clone”, within this immaculate engine bay is a 350ci V8.  It is bathed in Chevrolet Orange and has some chrome dress up on for the valve coverings, air cleaner, alternator bracket and master cylinder cap.  Under the air cleaner lies a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock intake feeding the mill.  On the back is a 3-speed automatic TH350 transmission  The axle is a Ford 8" configuration and we note headers are on for the exhale.  Just pristine under this hood, much like the rest of the car.

Undercarriage
Looking much like it has been blasted then sprayed in black.  There is no rust to be seen on this car, just some minor patina and road dirt.  Independent coil springs suspension is on the front, and leaf springs are bringing up the rear.  Power drum brakes are noted all around and helping the aforementioned headers with the big exhale is a dual exhaust system with Turbo style mufflers.

Drive-Ability
Out test driver said it was a pleasure to drive, as it started quickly, drove great, all options worked flawlessly and was an overall tight car to drive.  Thankfully he managed to avoid Morgantown's finest during the high speed portion of his test drive and was able to return with my chicken nuggets and fries still piping hot. 

A clone and a well performed frame on restoration.  Nice clean and a powerful 350ci, power brakes and a cleaner than clean interior.  All straight lines and all looking good in its newly cloaked SS clone form, and those are the facts!!!
