1969 Chevrolet Nova Sedan

1969 Chevrolet Nova SS

It's the classic cautionary tale about the pitfalls of doing business in foreign countries that can be found in hundreds, (if not thousands), of books about marketing: General Motors introduced their Chevrolet Nova model of automobile into a Spanish-speaking market, then scratched their heads in puzzlement when it sold poorly.  GM executives were baffled until someone finally pointed out to them that “nova” translates as “doesn't go” in Spanish.  The embarrassed automobile giant changed the model name to the Caribe, and sales of the car took off.  As the facts prove this is indeed a tall tale, however it lives on in internet infamy.

For consignment, ripe for the picking here at Classic Auto Mall, this fire engine red and black vinyl topped restored example is showing off as a very juicy morsel of Detroit metal and sculpting, from our inventory.  With straight steel panels, nice chrome, beautiful interior and polished factory wheels we can have you red with envy, and ready to turn the key and go, (Like Hell), with the custom built mill.  Off into the sunset, albeit fast!

Exterior
From its single headlight on either side upfront, blackened egg crate grille with centrally located SS badge, shiny trim surround and nice bumper below we are firmly planted in 1969 bowtie muscle.  Straight bright red painted steel minds its gaps and has slight crimp in the center, all straight and true at the belt line for some extra body sculpting. Chromed window trimmings add a nice contrast to the red, as well as the excellent condition black vinyl top.  For 1969, smooth long nicely descending B pillars frame the rear glass and seamlessly melt into the trunk deck.   A side view has great lines and bringing up the rear is a rounded back roll pan with wrap around bumper and tail lighting just above.  On the corners are 14 and 15-inch factory wheels wrapped in raised white lettered BFG Radial T/A's.  All period correct bowtie muscle that has received plenty of attention.

Interior
A swing of the doors and black vinyl molded with some horizontal ribbing, chrome levers and cranks, and a horizontal badge show up as straight as arrows on these door panels.  Turning our attention to the interior, we see a stretched from door to door bench with smooth black vinyl bolsters and black inserts which are looking nearly unused.  In back its a nice black full vinyl bench.  All these seats float in a nice calm clean sea of black carpeting, protected by black mats with orange edging.  Above in front is a slightly modded dash which has some toggles, an aftermarket AM/FM/CD radio and an aftermarket column mounted tachometer.  It is fronted by a wood rimmed rally steering wheel.  In the center hanging from the bottom of the dash is a threesome of SunPro white face gauges to monitor water temp, volts and oil PSI.  In the middle of the bench protruding from the hump is a Hurst shifter with a white ball topper.  Above is a nice tight black vinyl headliner which presents as new.

Drivetrain
Under the hood and smashed within a neat engine bay which is very clean, is now a consignor stated 4 bolt main 355ci small block Chevy fire breathing  mill.  It's been bored .030 over, align honed, and decked .010.  Also within its confines is a GM 3.48 inch stroke nodular iron crankshaft, Scat 5.7 inch forged 4340 steel I beam rods with SPS bolts are inside.  Speed Pro provides the Duroshield Hypereutectic flat top 4 valve relief pistons.  There is a Lunati 262/268 hydraulic cam and Pro Comp 210cc heads with 64cc chambers and vortec port design.  A Professional Products Crosswind intake manifold is on top with a Holley 1850-3, (4160), 600cfm 4-barrel carburetor with vacuum secondaries topping it all.  A Saginaw 4-speed manual is bolted to the back and sends power to a 10 bolt rear axle weighing in with 2.73 gearing.  Quite the build from noted engine builder "Big Al" at SSR engines in Newton, NC.

Undercarriage
Just all beautifully and painstakingly restored, slightly patina black and a new fuel tank in its silver metal glory.  Headers feed down to black and silver coated dual Flowmaster exhaust which snakes its way rearward past independent coil spring front suspension, and leaf spring with traction bar rear suspension.  Seen are power front disc brakes and power rear drums.  A very nice job if I must say so myself!

Drive-Ability
My partner in crime decoder and resident car expert, (why do you think I sound so knowledgeable??!), loves late 60's muscle so he took it for a spin and returned with just a smile on his face!  He reported snappy acceleration, bias free panic stopping, good handling and all functions working just fab but the reverse lights did not illuminate when the transmission was put into R.

A juicy fire breathing example of the Nova SS tribute, bathed in eye-catching bright red with a back vinyl top.  A snappy excellent black vinyl interior, Hurst shifter and a beautiful deep end of the pool exterior painted surfaces.  Quite the SS if I say so myself!
