1974 Dodge Dart Swinger

1974 Dodge Dart Swinger

This car went through a lot of changes in its early years in order to become the car that we know and love today.  The first car released in 1960 was considered a full-size car, and over the next three years, it gradually moved from a mid-size to a compact car in order to compete with the other cars in its division.  People were looking for something smaller, and as stated earlier, the Plymouth Valiant was the perfect example of what consumers wanted. They managed to downsize this car even further into something that became a bestseller.  There was one model for 1974 that actually came with a surfboard as part of the package deal.  It was called the Hang Ten Dart Sport and it was a sport version of this classic vehicle that featured a white body with red and blue stripes and some shagalicious deep pile orange carpeting.

For consignment, a 1974 Dodge Dart which is a 2 owner car, sports a respray of the original color paint and has an amazingly low original 52,176 miles on it.  It has all new suspension and a Pypes exhaust system and was featured on a Pypes YouTube video/promotional piece.  Star of stage and screen right here in our Hallowed Halls of Classic Auto Mall.

Exterior
Deep Sherwood Green paint which is from a repaint of the correct color from the factory is adorning the steel panels of this Swinger.  The paint still holds up well, however on the lowers of this car I see some invasive rust, cracking or prior body repairs, and under paint bubbling.  This is reserved mainly for the rockers and before and aft of the wheel wells.  Leading the way is a V shaped egg crate grille with a single headlight on each corner.  Along with said headlight is a rectangular turn signal also in this grille egg crate field.  Below is a shiny bumper in good condition.  Trimmings in stainless steel are all over this car including surrounding the grille, wheel wells, rockers windows and drip edges.  The green paint has just a hint of metallic within it which adds a bit of bling to the exterior.  Gaps are nicely minded on the body, and for the roof, there is a nicely preserved green vinyl top covering.  On the back, a black stripe encircles the trunk and rear quarters.  The back of the car drips 1970's design with its rectangular tail lights just slightly wrapping around the rear quarters, a rectangular aluminum D O D G E badged central strip, shiny bumper below and dual exhaust tips peeking out from under the rear roll pan.   Shiny 14-inch Mopar Rally Wheels with deep dish rings and dark argent center caps are all wrapped in BFG Radial T/A raised white letter tires from 2014 for the fronts and 2020 for the rears.

Interior
A swing-er of the long doors invites inside as we pass green vinyl vertical tuck and roll lowers, horizontal tuck and roll mid sections, and a wood appliqué upper.  The sills are deep green plastic and cranks and an inset actuator along with a mirror toggle complete the doors.  Inside we see dual green vinyl benches, the front split version for access to the rear.  These are low backed with headrests, have smooth bolsters and sides, and more tuck and roll for the inserts.  On the drivers side a black gaffer tape repair has been performed on the seat.  In front a wood rimmed Tuff Wheel steering wheel replaces the factory wheel and this fronts the original dash.  Here we see plenty of square and rectangle design, padded green dash top and more wood appliqué.  The dash is very clean with plenty of plastic chromed trimmings within each field.  In the center resides the factory radio which has been disabled due to an aftermarket Alpine AM/FM/CD/ Bluetooth digital stereo.  This resides below the dash, as does an aftermarket tachometer in the round.  Our consignor states that a new rear package deck has been put in to accommodate the stereo speakers.  More wood appliqué for the dash front uppers and glovebox.  Below is nice clean green carpeting, and above is a matching green vinyl headliner with no seams.

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and we are in another very clean environment within the engine bay.  Here in its center is an original blue painted block, and valve covered 318ci V8.  It has a 2-barrel carburetor on top, and a factory numbers matching A904 3-speed automatic transmission on back.  For the rear axle we have an 8-1/4 inch version.  As stated Pypes mufflers are on for the exhale.  All factory and all pristinely clean, with no rust or corrosion or even dust!

Undercarriage
More cleanliness with just slight signs of surface rust in the light variety.  A new fuel tank and suspension in the form of front torsion bars and rear leaf springs are noted.  Disc brakes are on front, and drums on the rear.  All the rust seems to have been suffered on the exterior as the rockers appear clean on the inside, as do the undersides of the doors.  The floor pams are also clean and surface rust free.

Drive-Ability
She fired right up and was no match for the test track where it has smooth snappy acceleration, easy shifting which is also smooth, and bias free panic stopping.   The wipers are not operating however the solution of new linkage bushings are in the trunk.  Also some of the center dash bulbs are out but all else was functioning splendidly.

An original with a few upgrades still holding its factory luster.  A very clean engine bay and undercarriage.  A bit of rocker and fore and aft wheel well rust on the exterior, and all original interior looking very clean.  A low mileage example ready to do some Swingin'.  Light the fondue pot, and pour me a Cosmo.
