1983 Mercedes-Benz 300D Sedan

1983 Mercedes Benz 300D

The first Mercedes-Benz 300D automobile, (not to be confused with the 300d), was introduced in 1975 and started its life by placing the newly developed 3.0 liter five-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine in a W115 chassis four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz 240D diesel.  For the American market those cars only came with power windows and automatic transmission.  The W123 chassis of the Mercedes-Benz 300D was introduced as a 1976 model, (1977 U.S.).  Its 3.0 liter five-cylinder diesel engine with indirect injection, (using a Bosch MW for the American market), or W for the rest of the world piston-type mechanical fuel injection pump produced 80 to 88 hp depending on the year or country, from an extra 600cm³ more displacement than the four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz 240D diesel.  The W123 chassis evolution continued with the addition of the 300D Turbo Diesel in 1982,(1981 for station wagon), sporting a 3.0 litre five-cylinder turbocharged engine which was originally developed in 1978 and first offered in the US market for 300SD models in 1979.  This engine developed 118 to 123 hp and considerably improved the car's performance while still maintaining the superb reliability and efficiency of earlier models.  In addition to the sedan, (300D), a station wagon, (300TD), and coupe, (300CD), were also produced.  The 300TD also had optional rearward facing third row seat which could fold flat into the floor, which was also seen on Volvo, Saab 95 and Ford Taurus station wagons.

For consignment, an all stock, all original W123 300D, (4 door sedan),Turbo Diesel.  This cruiser from West Germany sports a mere 57,768 title verified miles, and with a glance at the title appears to be an original owner consignment.  It has the original owners manual, climate control and cruise control operation cards, warranty booklet, MB maintenance books and a dealership brochure.

Exterior
Anthracite Gray Metallic, the original color, is found on the exterior of an obviously meticulously cared for car.  Straight heavy gauge steel for this diesel built like a Panzer tank, that sports well minded gaps.  A nicely chromed central grille with the tri-pointed star atop has the headlights and very European yellow fog lights flanking on either side.  A shiny chromed bumper is below and has a rubber strip running through its center.  A thin chromed trimming runs the length of the car and passes by the 4 doors, one at the beltline and another above the rockers, and clean rocker panels on bottom are noted.  Those chrome bumpers, brite work, and badging, all dimple and corrosion free and clean.  Mirror polished stainless trimming highlights the factory tinted glass all around and looks just fab.  The paint is near perfect and is a testament to the owner's diligent care throughout the years.  Wheels are standard Mercedes Benz 14-inch and the tires, while appearing like new, are from the 44th week of 1997.

Interior
Smooth leather and perforated MB-Tex in rarely seen black color in very nice condition covers the bucket seats in front and bench seat in back.  Immaculate black carpeting covers all the lower surfaces, and is very clean and not worn at all!  A near showroom dash and center console house all correct working gauges along with climate controls, and lots of black forest walnut veneer seen mixing in with the black vinyl coverings of the console and dash top.  The fully working Becker AM/FM/Cassette radio is nestled between the dash, and the console holds the power window, power mirror, and emergency flasher rocker switches.  All this is very clean and the veneer is near perfect.  A nice tight gray headliner is above and framing an electric retracting moonroof.  A shout out to the truck, clean as a whistle and appearing to never have even hauled cargo.

Drivetrain
An inline 5 cylinder Turbo Diesel engine, (3.0 L), fed by Bosch indirect injection is coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission to take you smoothly and slowly up to speed.  Some patina is noted, but overall very light on the cast parts bolted on to this 5 cylinder.  The rear axle weighs in at a 3.07 ratio.

Undercarriage
A rust free, including the surface variety, nicely undercoated undercarriage is seen while on the lift.  All solid unibody construction, floor pans and suspension parts which include independent coil springs for every corner.  Power disc brakes and single exhaust are also noted for this diesel well kept beauty.

Drive-Ability
As a test drive revealed, this car takes just a small lapse of time for that turbo to kick in, but when it does, the car accelerates to any car of today's standards.  It is a bit slow and your judgement will need to acclimate to this which is typical of 1980's D's.  All functions fully operational and akin to driving a nearly new car.  Eine Fünf-Sterne LuxusFahrt

Our consignor that has cared for this car cosmetically as well as mechanically, has yielded this original classic Turbo Diesel that appears literally like new.  Low low miles on the odometer along with the durability of the Mercedes-Benz build, will be active for a long time.  Unlike earlier non-turbo models, this car can keep up with today's fast moving vehicles with turbo acceleration and diesel durability, and don't forget Mercedes-Benz reliability and build quality, all expertly pampered in its lifetime. What an excellent combination!
