1979 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

1979 Chevrolet Corvette

Typically, after a celebration, life returns to a comfortable baseline.  Not for Corvette, not this year.  We saw in 1977, the 500,000th Corvette roll off production, and in 1978 we celebrated the Silver Anniversary.  This year, in 1979, Corvette sold over 50,000 Corvettes for the first time in history, and 1979 still holds the record for most Corvettes sold in a year!  In addition to surpassing production numbers, the 1979 Corvette was the first to sell for over $10,000.  The price hike didn't deter Corvette enthusiasts, as evidenced by the numbers.

For consignment, a 1979 version of the ubiquitous “Vette” which has had some recent work performed as our consignor states within the last 4K miles.  New paint, a new interior, a total rebuild of transmission with a shift kit, a rebuilt rear end, new brakes. a double roller timing chain and a new catalytic converter.

Exterior
Gone are any evidence of chrome edges with any bumpers or grille surrounds.  Now the Dark Blue Metallic painted fiberglass undulating sexy body is surrounded by dark blue neoprene bumpers which flare outward at the fenders and have hidden headlights just above.  These then run along the front hood with flanking shark gill vents on either side of the front quarters, Coke bottle shaped tops, and a stainless steel rocker trimming are all over the sides.  The body overall is in fair condition with some chipping off of the paint and numerous scratches throughout.  Body matching T tops in blue can be removed to free flow air with the cockpit.  Sculpted doors with handles that push down on top near their sills are truly aerodynamic and look great as well.  The rear greenhouse curved glass runs into a spoiler at the top of the now rounded total neoprene rear of the car, and still maintains the deep set round taillights.  Dual black exhaust tips peek out from underneath.  Polished 17-inch ZR1 style wheels add a nice contrast to the blue fiberglass which presents very good in condition overall.

Interior
Definitely one of the major highlights of this car, we see smooth shiny supple stitched blue leather covering the door panels on the uppers, and utilizing blue carpeting on the bottoms.  A blue highlight of wrap around leather is on the door pull and shiny handles and cranks are within the blue field.  Turning our attention to the inside, a rush of warmth wafts over my eyes with the factory dash front, and center of dash panels.  Not to leave out the steering wheel which is of rally design and uses a mix of faux leather in black to wrap the wheel and 4 horizontal splaying out spokes in the center. The center console is sporting black plastic with blue carpeted sides.  Deep blue carpeting for the floors, and even in the back is not faded.  Blue leather seats resemble the Michelin man and as stated by the consignor, are new.  Deep bolsters and some light tuck and roll inserts are making these high backed buckets very comfy.  In the center of the dash are a series of 5 analog gauges to monitor the vitals of the car.

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and more applause is necessary as we gaze upon a bowtie block, blue painted valve coverings, and supple hoses.  350ci is on this L48 4-barrel version V8, and a rebuilt 3-speed TH350 automatic with a shift kit is on back.  The rebuilt rear axle weighs in at 3.36 Positraction ratio.  A patina presentation is seen under the flip forward hood.

Undercarriage
There are structural issues with this car particularly in the horizontal support at the dog legs and frame rails forward which have been plated on the driver's side, but still allowing the top and outside of the rail to remain structurally unsound.  The remainder of the bottom is solid but has had a recent black spraying so it may be covering some nefarious faults with the underpinnings.  Hard to tell but worth further inspection.  4 wheel power disc brakes with new pads, rotors, and calipers are noted all around.  Providing the signature Corvette ride is a fully independent coil sprung front suspension and a frame anchored independent rear suspension with a transverse leaf spring.  A single exhaust system with a new catalytic converter is noted that ends under the rear bumper with dual stock style mufflers and tailpipes.  We note a heavy power steering leak that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and very smooth idle, and after a warm up it was off to the test track.  Here it has nice smooth acceleration, good solid braking and excellent handling.  The interior is super snazzy to be within with all functions working as they should.

A looker with a eye-catching paint hue and even more beautiful interior with the new leather seating.  Very clean example, but not without its faults and flaws.  The pop off the T top and breathe in some success when carving through the back roads in your 1979 Corvette.
