1996 Porsche 911 Targa

1996 Porsche 911 Targa

Porsche introduced the 911 Targa at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 1965. The Targa is neither a cabriolet nor a coupé, neither a hard top nor a saloon, but something completely new: the first safety cabriolet in the world with a fixed safety or roll bar. Driving in the open air can now be enjoyed like never before in open-top cars in a variety of different ways thanks to a removable folding roof and a fold-down plastic rear window: completely closed, fully open or just with the centre roof section removed or the rear window folded down. The Targa concept was the starting signal for a totally different kind of Porsche driving experience and would be featured not only in all future 911 generations, but also subsequently in other cars, such as the 914 or the Carrera GT.

The fourth generation of the 911 Type 993 was introduced in autumn 1993 in combination with a new body design, with the development of a new Targa concept from November 1995. For the first time in the 911, the front wings were wider and significantly flatter. The rear wings were also wider and ran in a straighter line to the rear. For your consideration, a very special Porsche 911 Targa, a Canadian spec 993 pampered and well maintained with a mere 82,595 title verified kilometers, (51,322) miles for those of us in the states, and yes it goes like hell! Gorgeous Schwarz Metallic paint, a gray interior in full leather jackets, the optional SportClassic 18-inch 2 piece wheels, a glass targa roof that gracefully slides back under the rear glass, and life is very good, for a great value, you can be in the seat of a 911 living the high life.

Exterior
A truly aerodynamic front of the car with an integrated bumper, gracefully sloping headlights, and the smooth front hood, all bathed in Porsche Schwarz Metallic, (black metallic for us non-german speakers). All gaps are laser straight and tolerance is all excellent to boot. The bulbous rear of the vehicle, works with the gently sloping glass to form the rear, also with a seamless rear body matching bumper complete with the sculpted taillights sounding either edge of the rear quarters and racing across the center of the tail end. A small rear spoiler sits just above the hood louvers to help with the handling when up to speed and fits nicely into the engine lid. Up top is factory tinted glass that with the push of a button retracts under the rear window giving you full exposure to the sun when open or left closed protecting you from the sun's heat thanks to the glass also being heat insulating. This is a snappy design that gives you an open air driving experience with a huge reduction in wind noise all without altering the timeless 911 roof line. 18-inch Porsche SportClass snowflake 2 piece wheels are wrapped in low profile all season rubber on all 4 corners.

Interior
Gray leather with just a nice touch of some break in wear covers the high back buckets with their over exaggerated bolsters and comfy tuck and roll inserts. In the rear are 2 very small integrated buckets that flank the center hump and can be folded down at the touch of a button. This all fronts a curvaceous sexy dash with some interplay of black panels, gray padding, and cascading circular black faced white letter gauges. We note that the speedometer is a kilometer per hour unit, the standard for a Canadian spec car. A Sirius/Pandora/IHeartRadio capable radio, along with AM/FM functions by Kenwood can keep you entertained on those long fast commutes via the Autobahn or your local 4 lane interstate track. Taking liberties to keep you in creature comfort heaven, this car is equipped with cruise control, power front seats, power windows, power locks, AC and the all important power retracting glass targa roof. Oh, and if that weren't enough, there is a power retracting sunshade that at the flick of a switch unrolls to shade the roof glass and keep you extra cool. Matching gray carpet floods the floors and rear side panels and up front is well protected by deep pile carpeted mats.

Drivetrain
Shoehorned into the rear of the car is a 3.6 liter flat 6 cylinder that is fed by EFI and makes a peak 282hp to the rear tires. Chiseled stainless steel exhaust snakes its way to the rear bottom of the sportswear. A 6-speed manual transmission is bolted on this naturally aspirated car and drives a 3.444 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
With a 95 percent coverage of ground effects panels, only the wheels are visible from the bottom. The panels are in very good condition with only slight road dirt and some scrapes on the lower front cowl of the bodywork. Rockers are solid, as is the unibody and flooring and big 4-wheel cross drilled disc brakes are present. Providing the cat on carpet ride is independent suspension front and rear. Satteln Sie auf, es ist Zeit für eine Fahrt

Drive-Ability
I could say a good time was had by all, but in reality, it was only me and my crack spec writer on the test track. Here this car has unlimited acceleration, smooth quick braking, and rail-like handling. The steering is snappy and responsive, and this car can cruise all day on the highway. All functions save for the reverse lights were flawlessly working including the glass roof.

A well maintained, obviously garage kept, with low low kilometers/miles, sporty 2 piece wheels shod in low profile tires, and big discs all around the fun is only beginning when you hop behind the wheel of this sport from Stuttgart. Take all the liberties you want, and delight in the fact you are behind the wheel of a classic 911/993 Targa...you big shot you!
