1948 Ford 8N Tractor

1948 Ford 8N Tractor

Official production of the 8N tractor began in July 1947.  Equipped with a 4-speed transmission, this model was destined to become the top-selling individual tractor of all time in North America.  The Ford N-series tractors were a line of farm tractors produced by Ford between 1939 and 1952, spanning the 9N, 2N, and 8N models.  The 9N was the first American-made production-model tractor to incorporate Harry Ferguson's three-point hitch system, a design still used on most modern tractors today.  It was released in October 1939.  This led to the brand name of “Fordson”

….And now for something completely different!  A fully restored 1948 Ford 8N tractor.  The definition of “you never know what is coming through the door here at Classic Auto Mall”.  Totally customized, totally cool, and looking radical, in its looks and mechanicals, our creative consignor took this farm worker to another level.  It now sports a Fanks aircraft engine conversion kit, bumping it up to 90hp from factory 30.  Add in some oversize tires and a custom stitched seat, and farming never looked so good.  Enter it into any show and it will be the standout in a crowd of the usual suspects.  So I enter it onto Hot Rods?  ….or does it go into Vintage Farm Equipment?  No matter, it does go into the category of “cool” only it is spelled KEUUWL, so put it in there!

The Machine:
Medium Gray bathes the upper portion of this nifty recreation and remains one of the many original parts to the 8N which came from the factory.  It  has a Vermillion Red painted grille guard and shiny black radiator cap.  The original headlights which hang off of either side have been retained.  Rear fenders are also in the gray and have a red painted Ford badge embossed into steel on the tops of them.  The remainder of the tractor is bathed in Vermillion Red and presents in near perfect condition.  The rear view shows single rear wheels and tractor tread tires with large gray painted interior wheel structure and red lug nuts and hubs.  The front wheels are wrapped with oversized industrial tires and also have the red centers.   The operator gets to perch high on a custom racing bucket seat complete with spider web pattern, red stitched black vinyl with some red piping and all within a black formed tub.  The driver gets to reach out for a vintage bakelite black large and in charge Ford styled steering wheel with 3 spokes and a center nut.  The dash has all new gauges with black faces, white letters and numbers and shiny wide bezels.   The shift lever is in the center sporting a long lever and black topper.  In back is the Ferguson three point hitch.  A smoke stack style exhaust rides to the sky on the operator's right side and has an awesome sound.  All paint and parts are just pristine and could even be called concours.

Drivetrain
Under the “hood” showing in blazing red with black supple wiring and hoses,  is a 226ci L head inline 6 cylinder Fanks aircraft engine conversion.  It has a1-barrel carburetor, which is very clean and shiny, hanging off the side.  A stock exhaust is on the side, and on the back is a standard 4 speed transmission with a crawler 1st gear.  This engine is cranked to wide via a 12 volt hi torque starting system.  All is kept cool with a stock fan and radiator.  This engine sounds awesome!  It's a stopper, (show and otherwise), too with mechanical rear drum braking which is like new.

Drive-Ability
What can I say, it drives like a tractor!  Albeit a very interesting one with lots-o-power, plenty-o-bling, and just original mixed in to make it really interesting.  This is not a puller or racer, just an interesting conversation piece that I'd love to put into a local fair and see what the reaction is.  (I'm in charge of the Denver, PA fair tractor competition and if it's around then I'm gonna do it!).

Something unique, something nearer to perfection as one can get, and all in 1948 Ford 8N style.  Time to get plowed. I may have just planted a seed for you to get interested?
