1965 Ford Mustang Convertible

1965 Ford Mustang Convertible

Advertisements became popular reminders of the Mustang's youthful spirit, such as one featuring two mature adults sitting in a new Mustang with the words, “Youth is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children.” It was the car to have if you were seeking the fountain of youth. The 1965 Ford Mustang was the car to have if you were looking to win over your neighbor or hit the road for fun and adventure. It was also a must-have for enthusiastic drivers and car enthusiasts who simply liked to drive.

Born on June 21st, 1965, this Mustang Convertible has undergone a complete restoration along with some minor engine upgrades. Retaining its original Arcadian Blue exterior and two-tone appointments on the interior, the restoration did take some liberties such as adding the GT fog light bar, GT trumpet exhaust tips, and Haartz convertible top for extra good looks. This Mustang is one of the finest examples to be presently gracing our overstuffed Hallowed Halls, and to quote our consignor..."This car flies and is a blast to drive!".

Exterior
A very smooth shiny coat of Arcadian Blue now covers the straight, well gapped steel panels. All brite work and chrome appears in very nice condition, with all windows and mechanicals related to the convertible top functioning well. A Haartz top is installed, presenting as new, with no tears and the rear window, being plastic, is crystal clear. There is a lever to electronically raise and lower it…what could be more convenient? Chrome 14-inch styled steel wheels are wrapped by nearly new medium whitewall 205/75R14 tires on all four corners. A flip of the trunk reveals a very well-done space covered with Ford plaid striped vinyl in very nice condition. Paying particular attention to the grille, one can see the quality of restoration that took place with a perfect prancing horse surrounded by a black honeycomb and framed by a rectangular border with 4 distinct mounting bars and chrome bezel GT fog lights. Next to the galloping Mustang badge are the single headlights in the vented inserts and moving down the sides reveals the iconic hockey stick cove with the chromed trim on the rear quarter, and a rocker trimming running the length below. Rounding out the tail end are tri-barred taillight lenses with a mustache thin chrome bumper below and chrome trumpet tipped dual exhaust peeking out of the lower valance.

Interior
Very much like the exterior in that it was meticulously restored with no stones left unturned, beautiful two-tone blue vinyl buckets and a matching rear bench seat sits in an ocean of blue medium loop pile carpet, which presents in like new condition. No fading or soiling is present on the carpets or the smooth bolstered and tuck and roll inserted seats. Seen sitting proudly within that hump is a factory blue plastic console with a textured black and aluminum ribbed topper and chrome T-handle automatic shifter. An aftermarket console with padded armrest and cup holders has been installed to make the drive just a bit more comfy. The dash appears like new with blue metal topped by a crack free blue padded vinyl topper. Within this area of the blue metal one can view 2 matching shaped rounded outboard gauge pods and the long rectangular speedometer in the center all within the black camera case framed by chrome that houses the Mustang gauges on the driver's side, and the glovebox on the passenger. Fronting the dash is a pristine Mustang steering wheel with a blue hoop on the outside and chrome 3 bar horn ring proudly perched on the steering column. The remaining knobs and levers are all very nicely restored, as is the factory AM radio and chrome heater slides. One can't forget to mention the blue vinyl tonneau cover for the top mechanism which is in near perfect condition.

Drivetrain
A lightly modified 289ci V8 sits in the middle of a beautiful engine bay. All appears factory stock with the black block and gold dress up for the air cleaner and valve coverings, however for some performance gains, cylinder heads with larger ports have been bolted onto the mill along with a mild performance camshaft being installed and a correct 4bbl carburetor and intake manifold for that extra kick in the pants. Attached to this mill is a 3-speed C4 automatic transmission and on the back is a Ford 8" rear axle assembly weighing in with a 2.80 conventional ratio.

Undercarriage
As with the topside, miles of black steel with only minor surface rust to break up the clean underside can be seen. 4-wheel drum brakes as well as independent coil spring front suspension and leaf spring rear are seen. A dual exhaust system takes spent fossils to the rear of the car via a pair of stock style mufflers all of which ends with a pair of chrome trumpet style tips that poke through the rear valance. We note repairs to the flooring and inner rockers to provide years of structural integrity.

Drivability
This car started easily and ran great. It handled our test track like a champ, and we found no issues with it mechanically or cosmetically. Performance was well above average for a car of this era, handling was spot on and braking, even with the 4-wheel drums was bias free.
Here we have a meticulously restored early Mustang convertible. Not totally original, but a great combination regardless. If you are in the market for a terrific classic, that starts right up and runs smoothly, this is the car that should grace your garage. Leave the kids at home in front of the TV, lower the top, and enjoy the sound of kid silence as the wind whips through your hair, and you have nothing but great conversation, and a smile on your face.
