1967 Ford Mustang Convertible

1967 Ford Mustang Convertible

From the 1967 Mustang advertising, bred first… to be first.  Then going on to list various features and at the end that say, and I quote “Smitten? Great!  I now pronounce you man and Mustang?”

A marriage made in heaven with Vintage Burgundy on the exterior, a snazzy black interior, and a black canvas convertible top.  With the body being restored in the mid 1980's then parked from 1991 until 2013 when the car was treated to a healthy rebuild for the 289ci V8, new inner rockers and flooring and a rebuild for the automatic transmission all leave me whispering I do, I do…really love this car!

Exterior
Bathed in a very nicely applied Vintage Burgundy, straight steel abounds.  Gaps are consistent and straight and only some minor scratches and chips are noted in the finish.  The iconic hockey stick cove is present in the rear quarters and it flows into the doors.  From the front bumper, grille galloping horse and wheel well as well as rocker trim all chrome is very nice with no dimpling or dulling.  For 1967 styling becomes slightly more aggressive on a simpler grille and deeper headlights, and on the back the former outward V shaped sergeant stripe tail lights have now been inverted to inward, but still using 6 individual lights.  Original wheels have been replaced with 14-inch chrome laden styled steel wheels, wrapped in nearly new 215/75R14 blackwall rubber.  A black power actuated canvas top in near showroom condition with a plastic rear window is the dollop of whipped cream on top if you will.

Interior
The lowering of the ceremonial convertible, (a rite of summer if you will), and we see black vinyl that is all in excellent condition.  The door panels are black painted uppers and lowers, and vinyl covered black panels in the middle with just a touch of chrome trim surround.  The front buckets continue with black horizontal stitched inner panels, and smooth black bolsters.  This continues into the back seat bench as well.  The buckets flank the carpeted hump with the chrome T handle shift lever dead center and within the driver's reach.  A dual squared off eyebrow design is reserved for the dash top and this plays in black and is above some more black for the painted metal on the bottom of the dash.  We can note the original instrument cluster, and steering wheel.  Black carpet is in good condition and floods all the floors.  Rubber floormats in black with the traditional Mustang logo protect the carpet and looking way back into the trunk we see very good condition square plaid vinyl lining throughout looking like new.

Drivetrain
Under the pristine hood, in the clean and tidy engine bay, is a rebuilt 289ci V8 with 10.0:1 compression.  It has a mild performance cam by Comp Cams with .460i/.474e lift installed and 351ci Windsor V8 heads bolted on with roller tipped rockers.  A single Holley 4-barrel 600cfm carburetor is on top and Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold completes the package.  A rebuilt C4 3-speed automatic transmission with a shift kit and a bump over stock converter is in back with a Ford 8-inch 2.79 rear axle.  A dual stainless steel mufflered exhaust with headers helps with the exhale.  We also note power steering to make the long drives easy and comfortable.

Undercarriage
A slight coating of surface rust is seen on some usual suspects, but structurally rust free for the unibody, floor pans and rockers.  Light road dirt and patina is on the black painted surfaces.  Drum brakes, all new, are noted on the front and back and for the ride we see an independent coil sprung front suspension working with leaf springs in the rear.

Drive-Ability
Twas a nice day indeed, so we put the top down while me and my cohort went for a jaunt.  We found this car to run well, handle nicely, shift smoothly, and corner with ease.  We noted all functions…well…functional!

An older example still maintaining its luster, sporty interior, and smooth-running rebuilt power plant.  Very nice paint, clean tear free power operating convertible top, sporty wheels, and shiny chrome and trim.  I feel we will be together at least until death do us part.
