1934 Chevrolet Master 4-Door Sedan

1934 Chevrolet Master 4-Door Sedan

With its wind-swept design and classic good looks, the Chevrolet Master series has always been a rare and highly desirable line of cars.  Not surprisingly, gearheads, customizers and all but 90 years worth of dedicated fans have elevated it to one of hot rodding's greatest cultural icons.

Just glancing at cars in the halls of Classic Auto Mall, one can spot the good, bad and the ugly right away, and you do not need much of a trained eye.  This one, using nothing but the best, is definitely a good category build and can be shown or used as a daily driver, it's that well done.  Let's just say that amongst all the Hot Rods here, this one is definitely a "shining ruby" and definitely worth a look if you are not into the build part of the game.

Exterior
An all steel '34 Chevy Master 4 door sedan body, retaining its original roof line, crystal clear glass, dark red paint, and a touch of custom in the form of gray beltline pinstriping that wraps itself around the body starting at the cowl and running fully around the body.  The true highlight are the custom chrome 15-inch rally wheels with smooth dog dish center caps.   Fiberglass has its advantages, but there simply is nothing like factory steel to make a true hot rod.  A bright trim spear separates the center hinged hood with its tri-trimmings on the cowl sides.  Fronting this hood is a body matching grille surround with thin chrome trimming around the blacked out eggcrate grille.  Large chrome headlight mounts adorn the grille and fender niche, and black texture painted and diamond plate covered running boards bridge the gap between the curvaceous front and rear fenders.  All chrome trimmings, including the heavily chromed bumpers are present and accounted for, as is the swept back phoenix hood ornament.   I cannot forget the smoked glass moonroof cut into the long ribbed steel roofing, giving the front seat passengers a view of what's above.

Interior
Bird is the word…actually it's a nice leather in Oxblood red. When flipping open the doors one can just feel the warmth on your cockles as your eyes scan the dark red tweed panels with stitched dividers and the chrome knobs, cranks, and the door actuator.  Inside floating in a sea of black carpeting which is wonderfully clean, are 2 low back stitched leather buckets with nice sturdy bolsters and some tuck and roll in the center.  These are fronted by a full metal jacket body matching red painted dash with a mixed lineup of VDO, Sunpro, and SW round gauges in a brushed aluminum panel and lower dash with the ignition switch and a few knobs in the center.  On top of the fixed position red column is a black rimmed 4 spoke rally steering wheel.  An AM/FM/CD stereo is hanging below the dash underneath the glovebox.  In back, an overstuffed leather covered bench stretches from side to side and there is plenty of rear passenger room.  The headliner is tan broadcloth and highlights the moonroof perfectly.

Drivetrain
Lifting either side of the cowled hood reveals the engine bay and within we see a blinged out 350ci V8 topped with a 4bbl Edelbrock carburetor.  Some chrome is on for the dress up on the valve covers and open element air cleaner as well as the alternator.  A 10 bolt rear axle handles all the power sent from the engine via a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission.

Undercarriage
Attracting all the attention underneath is the strong steel frame and all black attachments, with just minor hints of surface rust.  A black steel frame provides the backbone for the body, running boards and suspension, all looking just fab.  An independent Mustang II style front suspension is on with adjustable coil overs and bringing up the rear is a leaf spring arrangement.  The headers feed down to a Smithy's muffler equipped exhaust system and we see power disc brakes front and rear providing the stop on a dime and give change factor.

Drive-Ability
A pop of the door and a twist of the knob and I'm in street rod heaven.  The V8 has a great rumble but not so much as to drown out my favorite tunes.  My test drive was on a wonderful late fall Pennsylvania day so I could go windows down, but I chose to leave them up as this particular car is sans heat and frankly I do not enjoy the cold.  Taking a tour around the often imitated but never duplicated Classic Auto Mall test track I looked cool as a cucumber and my ears had a perfect mixture of exhaust notes along with tunes on the radio.  Power was more than adequate, shifting smooth, and braking was exceptional and bias free.  One issue with most street rods is lack of interior room and comfort, this car has that problem solved and then some.

Very impressive, and a build you could not replicate for the price of this gorgeous, high performance, great handling, convenience loaded vintage looker.  All wrapped up in factory steel, deep dark red and thankfully no flames...a must see in person to really appreciate this standout.  The photos do not do it justice, frankly because I'm not in them, so come visit our Hallowed Halls and see this rod in person.  You won't be disappointed with this ready to drive cross-country build.
