1966 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle

1966 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle

The Chevrolet Motor Division began working on an intermediate size automobile in 1960-1961 with delivery to dealers to begin in September 1963.  The name of that car was the Corselle.  The Corselle design team was sworn to secrecy about this project, and all advertising documents were highly protected by Chevrolet.  No Corselle information could even be "leaked" to the media.

For consignment, a 1966 Chevelle in Malibu trim.  This beauty is an SS clone with a BIG 454ci mill,  has beautiful red paint, full original interior, and all work was done in 1996.

Exterior
Arrest me red screams out of the exterior of this car, and it is the deep end of the pool.  Plenty of overspray areas are seen throughout, and it's covering straight steel panels.  Some areas of invasive rust are noted around the rocker trimmings with their chromed horizontal ribs, where we can see some bubbling underneath, and paint chip offs.  A few other chips here and there, and in front, on the passenger quarter just below the badge there is a crack on the paint.  Also more bubbles are proliferating at the B pillar on the passenger's side of the rear glass, and on the driver's side near the side of the window trim.  One other area of concern is on the driver's side drip edge of the roof where more rust bubbling can be seen.  Shiny chrome and trimmings are on this car including the front horizontal ribbed grille with dual flanking headlights and a nice bumper below.  This year for the Malibu uses lots of edge trimmings including the front quarter corner with an angled in trimming next to the headlights, a band around each wheel well, a ribbed rocker trimming, window surrounds and on back surrounding the tail light area below the trunk lid,  Small horizontal tail lights are on either side along with a large badge in the center.  Dual exhaust peek out from underneath the shiny rear bumper.  15-inch AstroBlade wheels are on and wrapped by 215/70R15's in front, and 225/75R15's on back all from the 10th week of 2000.

Interior
Between the doors is full factory in black vinyl.  Starting with the door panels using the black with some horizontal ribs chrome trimmings and shiny actuators and cranks  a painted red sill is just above the black.  Inside the original factory angled dash is installed, this has a nice crack free dash pad on top, some wood appliqué just underneath which runs across the entire dash, and just below a black strip which houses the GM horizontal speedo a few square gauges, an aftermarket radio which is AM/FM/Cassette with a digital readout, climate control sliders and a glove box for the passenger.  Below is a trio of extra gauges floating above a sea of black carpeting and on the hump, a B&M shifter.  Nicely preserved black vinyl benches, a split back in the front, and a full bench in back.  Above a black headliner remains nice and tight.

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and under the watchful eye of “Rat Fink”, (a Big Daddy Roth creation to poke fun at Mickey Mouse!), we see an AH HA moment.  Here stuffed in is a 454ci V8 with plenty of chroming on the valve coverings and bolt ons.  Braided stainless hoses abound adding to the engine mystique, and on top is a single 4-barrel carburetor.  The mill is backed by a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission and a 12 bolt rear.  Dual turbo mufflers and large pipes allow for the dual exit exhale from the plethora of cubes.  All looking good under the hood.

Undercarriage
Some heavier application areas of dark black rustproofing most likely hiding surface rust are noted on edges of the fuel tank and floor pans.  I don't see any structural problems underneath, and what I do see is independent coil springs for the front suspension, and a 4 link with coil springs for the rear. Power disc braking is now on all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
Our crack decoder snapped up this one as he is a muscle car lover, and to say the least he liked it.  Plenty of power to spare, unbelievable acceleration, and can also cruise, all be it loudly.  Very nice build overall were his comments, as he exited with a smile.  He did lose his smile though with several inoperable functions like no horn, wipers, radio, heater blower and high and low headlights.

As the consignor states it is an SS clone with a big 454ci mill under the hood.  Some exterior rusting is of concern but nothing that cannot be fixed in time to avoid disaster, but it is there.  The in-op electrics need a once over, but hey it's a classic '66 Malibu in red, so it's going to go…fast down the road.
