1965 Ford Falcon

1965 Ford Falcon

Drag racing seems like it's been with us forever.  In truth it's a postwar phenomenon, with roots stretching back to the dry lakebed racing in Southern California in the 1930's.  From those humble beginnings to modern times, when a modern Top Fueler can go 0-1000 feet in a tick over 3 seconds at speeds topping 330mph....we've come a long way baby!

The Falcon went through its first complete makeover when the '64 models bowed in late 1963.  More chiseled and square-edged than its predecessor, the car appeared larger than before, though truthfully was only incrementally so.  A large variety of body styles continued with two sedans, two wagons, sedan deliveries, Rancheros, convertibles, hardtops, and vans.  A 200ci six-cylinder arrived in 1964, while the 289 followed in 1965.  For consignment, we have a Falcon race car that has been modified to the hilt to go as fast as possible in a straight line.  Completely gone through and now a roller, this car hasn't seen the track in 3 years and according to our consignor "wasn't raced much in the last 10 years".  Read on and get your adrenaline pumping!

***Please Note: This car is sold on a Bill Of Sale only***

Exterior
This Ford Falcon looks like it's going fast standing still, almost like the designers had racing in mind when this body was penned.  Dipped in acrylic red with a candy and pearl pink to yellow fade encompassing most of the colors of the rainbow, creating a faux side trim down the side this steel and fiberglass 1/4 miler to show it really means business.  Add in a Lombardo Racing Engines decal and "Flying Falcon" surrounded by lightning bolts on the doors and you're ready to hit the burn out box,  The only remaining steel panels are the roof and rear quarter panels and the doors, the latter of which have been lightened and are easily removable.  All other bodywork is fiberglass.  The hood, hood scoop and doors are easily removed for those between rounds thrashes.  Fiberglass bumpers adorn the front and rear of this ride and a large hood scoop sits atop the center rear of the hood and flows back to the windshield.  Not to be forgotten is the multi-color stripe running down the center of the hood, roof and trunk lid, mimicking the side paint scheme.  This scoop is ready to suck in all the air the engine needs along with any errant birds or small children who get too close.  Lexan has replaced all the glass in the name of weight savings and the trunk lid is now fiberglass.  A small aluminum spoiler keeps the rear of the car planted firmly on the ground at high speeds . Working head and tail lights take up residence on the front and rear and we can't forget the single Deist parachute to bring things to a graceful whoa after a low 8 second pass.  Just below all of this is a set of wheelie bars to keep the front end from going to the moon!  Oh, and for the true Falcon aficionado, you are correct, the roofline is lower than factory, thanks to a 2" chop.  Very aerodynamic and very kewl!  Keeping this racer on the ground are 15" Weld spindle mount wheels up front and in the back are Weld Racing wheels with beadlocks and steamroller inspired 33x15.0-15 slicks from Mickey Thompson.

Interior
A swing of the ultra-light steel door and we're greeted with mirror polished aluminum panels, a black painted and SFI padded round tube chromoly roll cage, a single vinyl covered racing bucket seats and a litany of gauges, controllers and buttons.  This chassis was fabricated by the world renowned Ed Quay Race Cars in Pottstown, PA and is NHRA 25.4 certified to 7.50 seconds.  A bare bones steering column features a detachable wheel for easy ingress and egress.  Once inside the electro-pneumatic powered Hurst shifter is to the driver's right and an Impact racing harness is in place to keep you buckled in nice and tight.  Gauges are placed strategically along the fabricated aluminum dashboard and monitor all vital engine functions.  Also included is a Davis Racing crossover delay box and on the passengers floor are an MSD 7Al-2 Plus ignition controller and another MSD window switch.  A full gamut of fuses and switches hangs attached to the roll cage above the driver and for the sake of easy maintenance and repairs the entire flooring, transmission tunnel and rear wheel tubs can easily be removed via the Dzus fasteners.  The only thing missing is an interior cooling fan as this writer only sat in the car while it was being maneuvered around for its photos and let me tell you I couldn't imagine being in a full fire suit on a 90 degree day strapped in without that little life saver.

Drivetrain
Removing the lightweight hood and massive hood scoop we are met with not the factory engine bay, but an open expanse that stretches from wheel to wheel with nothing in between but steel tubing and more polished aluminum.  Presently set up for a big block Ford 460ci based V8 powerplant and ATI SuperGlide transmission, the reality is that the sky is the limit for cubic inches.  We note the custom fabrication in the bay to allow for a 12" setback for the drivetrain...better weight balance and transfer folks!  The power is put to the ground via a Mark William large pinion Ford 9" with 4.29 gears that uses a spool and Mark Williams axles and a Mark Williams driveshaft is included

Undercarriage
Black chromoly tubing replaces the factory unibody and now runs the full length of the car along with the aluminum metal replacing the factory floors.  Independent suspension with rebuilt Lamb front struts and adjustable coil overs is on the while a 4 link setup with adjustable coil overs is on the rear.  A new Strange master cylinder starts off the 4 wheel disc brake system and we note Mark Williams disc brakes up front with new calipers and pads and Aerospace Brakes rear disc brakes with new calipers and pads are on the rear.  This brake system is entirely new and has never had brake fluid in it.  All business down here.
