1937 Plymouth P4 Deluxe Business Coupe

1937 Plymouth P4 Deluxe Business Coupe

From the movies a promotional “trailer” if you will using the hood ornament as inspiration for the ad that read: The 1937 Plymouth...There it is sailing along to new records for appearance, economy, safety and performance, sailing along the highways of the nation, the greatest value in all Plymouth history - a history replete with value.  Plymouth was the only car at the time that built a million units in the first six years of its existence.  Then in a little more than 2 years, the second million mark was achieved.  Look at the record of Plymouth triumph during the Depression and since.  There is only one way to attain this skyrocketing popularity and that's by building extraordinary value.

For consignment, a curvaceous 2 door business coupe sailed into our facility and now is docked in the North hallway.  It's a 1937 P4, (which was the inventory code for this particular car), Plymouth deluxe business coupe.  The car presents in overall fair condition, has some markings and water spotting on the exterior finish, and the interior mohair is somewhat worn but is still intact and very usable.  A wonderful design set to “cruise” to a show or go for a Sunday drive, it can handle both.  And since it has low original mies, it makes it even more attractive despite its faults, but I'd ask whether you would be in this good of shape for being 86 years old?  Huh?

Exterior
A 30's art deco styled oval grille with vertical ribs leads the way and is flanked by a single bullet style headlight on either side.  The triple sail Mayflower hood ornament is on top of the rounded over hood, which has the front english wheel shaped fenders hanging off of either side.  A simple curved bumper is below in chrome and has rabbit ears for some extra bling on either side of it.  Wide white wall tires are within the framing of the front and rear fenders, and in between is a running board.  Running boards have some extra metal nailed on to them as the edges were in need of repair.  Doors have rounded glass within them, and the back of the coupe has a crescent shaped window for the rear passengers.   For the rear of the car an oval rear glass is in the middle of the B pillars which gracefully descend into the trunk line which keeps the gentle downward motion sloping to the bottom of the rear bumper, which has a nice shine to it.  A single rounded tail light hangs off of either rear fencer which is nearly totally melted into the rear quarters, but still the protrusion exists.  The black paint shows some war wounds in the form of deep scratches, and some dents and dings as well as plenty of watermarks.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see chocolate mohair covering the door panel uppers and some faux leather/vinyl on the lowers.  Nickel plated actuators and cranks are within the field of upper mohair.  In front, a split back bench sits in a tub which is all covered in chocolate covered mohair.  This shows some areas of wear, but overall remains very nice, and is believed to be original.  In back a folding back bench is covered in mohair, and has a split back which can fold down individually and allow access through a vinyl panel to the trunk for longer item storage.  Chocolate mohair also covers a curved panel above the seats as well as the headliner, which is in good condition with no stainless or signs of water intrusion.  Newer black rubber floors are in the entire cabin.  In front a simple full metal jacket dash painted in brown has some thinner chromed trimmings, rounded gauges neat art deco two tone styling, and a center panel with more round pulls and knobs with a Mayflower etched badge in its center.  A big glovebox is on the passenger side and below is a nice large round heater unit.  All surfaces for the interior metal have a wonderful matte sheen on them and come across very tasteful in their design and finish.

Drivetrain
Under the cowled hood after being given a lift we are treated to a 201.3ci L headed inline 6 cylinder mill which has blue paint on it.  It sports a 1-barrel carburetor and a factory original 3 speed manual transmission.  In back is a 4.11 gear pumpkin.  A little bit of dust, a little bit of rust, and some paint peel off are on this engine bay but all is in fairly good condition and it runs just fab.

Undercarriage
Looking all nice and black had to be resprayed at some point but whenever, it has totally remained rust free.  An X frame and stamped floor pans are looking solid, and the glasspack style single exhaust runs from front to rear.  Independent coil sprung front suspension is on, and in back some leaf springs… Tires and wheels are brought to a halt by drum braking on all 4 corners

Drive-Ability
I arrived at the back door for my daily dose of drive-ability cars and picked those one first as it has a great design and look.  It performed nicely, had decent braking for drums, and steering was easy with the large bakelite black steering wheel to pull around on.  That previously referred to heater is inoperable due to the heater core being removed.  All else worked fine, it may need a gas flush with some new gas to run really great, as it eventually did after an extensive warmup.

This is a solid driver, not restored but in good Sunday driver condition. The interior is good, mechanicals have been maintained and the exterior is not perfect but until you decide to do something better, it is well within acceptable range.  Just polish those watermarks out and it will make a world of difference.
