2008 Jaguar XKR

2008 Jaguar XKR

The naturally aspirated 2007 Jaguar XK of 2007 left me smitten by its gorgeous looks, refined power, and balletic handling. Now in our Hallowed Halls is a 2008 XKR and I'm in love all over again. It's difficult to describe the difference between the XK and the XKR: to continue the ballet theme, if driving the XK was like sipping champagne with a ballerina, then getting behind the wheel of the XKR is like doing shots of vodka with Mikhail Baryshukov. With a 420-horsepower Eaton-supercharged 4.2-liter V-8, the XKR is one of the most powerful cars to ever roll out of a Jaguar factory, and with the family resemblance to the beautiful XK still intact. It is a handful.

For consignment, my new British fetish in the form of a 2008 Jaguar XKR. It checks all the boxes, Salsa Red, Black Leather and English Walnut on the dash. It has 420hp and goes like the wind off the white cliffs of Dover. This example is a highly optioned luxury sports car from dry Texas. Worth a peek but, EXTRA!, EXTRA! read all about it first…right here!

Exterior
Looking much like every other sports car to come out of Europe from 2008 is the only disappointing aspect of this car. Otherwise its pure cat-like behavior under the skin that's really what separates the men from the boys on this consignment. Aero headlights and tail lights, an oval grille, (shades of the XKE's of yore), and a triangular mesh grille and lower intake in the rounded bumper and we are on our way. A vertical chromed venting is within the front quarters, a rounded roofline which melts into the back of the car that has a greenhouse glass hatchback and small spoiler topping it. Curved Porsche-esque tail lights wrap around the rear quarters, and within the trunk lid back, are more lights looking like a Chevrolet Caprice. Dual exhaust on both sides peek out the rear roll pan and 20-inch Senta wheels are all around. All bathed in Salsa Red, and looking showroom in appearance.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we are in black leather and vinyl heaven. Sculpted door panels use some brushed aluminum panels within to house the power toggles for the seats, windows and mirrors. There is just a touch of walnut burl on these doors as well near the armrest/pulls. The burl continues throughout the interior of the dash surrounding the lower dash below the instrument cluster under a curved padded, stitched, dash top in black. It continues around the display screen, temp controls and sound system, on to the console, and also over in front of the passenger for the upper dash above the glovebox. On the steering wheel there are numerous controls for phone setup via bluetooth, and the adaptive cruise control. Seating is provided by front high back leather buckets in excellent condition, and a rear 2 plus 2 bench. In the burl covered console top is the starter button, ASl sport suspension button, and the gated automatic shift lever that offers up the sport tip-tronic shifting in manual/automatic mode, ( which is the excitement mode fer sur!). Black carpeting floods the floors, and above is a tight black suede headliner.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 4.2 Liter supercharged V8. It has EFI and a 6 speed automatic transmission on the back with a 3.31 rear axle. All is looking clean and our consignor states that it was regularly maintained.

Undercarriage
Underneath is rust free and shows some factory overspray of red. Stamped floor pans and aluminum components are all in good condition and very clean. Full 4 wheel independent suspension is on and is all light weight Al-u-minum as the Brits say! 4 wheel power disc braking is necessary to slow the roll from the overuse of all the ponies!

Drive-Ability
Do not let the ubiquitous exterior fool you, you are entering a rocket-ship on rails and the test track was not match for this car. Fab handling, neck snapping acceleration, bias free panic stopping, and in the manual/automatic stick-shift mode it gets even better on the performance front. All functions are working swimmingly, and as the Brits say; “ Oh just mahvelous!”

From the outside it may be a sleeper, although there are few distinctive give away as to its racing heritage. Don't buy it for that reason, buy it for the performance and handling it provides, and the creature comforts it hands out in spades. A pet cat if you will.
