1962 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

1962 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

With the creative influences of such incredible engineering talents as Edward Cole, Zora Arkus-Duntov and Bill Mitchell behind it, the C1 Corvette had emerged as an American classic, but one that was ready to undergo a transformation into something completely new and exciting.  The 1962 model year represents the end of an era for the Chevrolet Corvette.  Over the course of ten years, the Corvette had evolved from Harley Earl's conceptual two-seat sports car – a car that was initially plagued with design and performance deficiencies – into a vehicle that rivaled sports cars around the world with an unabashed reputation for performance and fun.

Our consignor states this car had undergone full on, no expense spared restification on a virgin never hit 1962 Corvette, which as you can see right away it is well done.  With the build done in 2002 many custom 1 off parts were created as the mass produced restomod aftermarket wasn't up to speed yet.  Full attention to detail was paid in every nook and cranny and over 10,000 trouble free miles have been logged on this Magnuson supercharged LS1 powered Vette. This amazing restoration has just 19,353 miles since completion. A multiple 1st place winner at the 2003 Corvettes at Carlisle (50th Anniversary Show), and Wheels In Motion, this 'Vette rides on a Paul Newman Car Creations chassis with C4 suspension and the supple leather interior is just body hugging bliss.   With a classic like this handsome restomod, standing out is guaranteed to be a nonissue.

Exterior
A deep Magnetic Red Metallic now covers the fiberglass exterior of this car which up front looks like the past, and on back like the future.  The fiberglass shows no sign of repair and is all buttoned up on the gap minding front.  Chrome for the bumpers and trim remains mirror-like and shiny with no dimples or rust.  Dual headlights frame a long fiberglass front hinged hood, with all correct badging and crossed flags.  A wrap-around windshield is trimmed with beautiful chrome and above is a tan canvas convertible top, which shows as new with the rear plastic window being crystal clear.  Operation is smooth on the up and down, and it tucks neatly into a fiberglass molded cove behind the dual buckets.  The “Corvette cove” is seen running from the front quarter, through the door panels, and has a chromed trim spear venting just behind the front wheel well.  A nice anodized aluminum rocker cover complete with horizontal ribs stretching from wheel well to wheel well.  The future is seen with the back of the car now taking on the Sting Ray look.  This would be the last model with a trunk as such until a special edition in 1982, and a similar version showing back up on the C5 model in 1998.  Chrome dipped 17-inch ZR1 style wheels are brightly presented wrapped by 255/45ZR17 radials from the 40th week of 2021.

Interior
Simply gorgeous tan floods the interior in vinyl and leather panels, coverings, and carpeting.  Chrome trimmings for the doors and handles are near perfect and the door panel itself is split between black and tan leather creating the perfect "look".  The seats are all new, in the original styling, and bend with the curve of the interior shell, which has a central storage compartment and a button to open the rear cowl for the top storage.  Tan hides cover these buckets with smooth bolsters and perforated tuck and roll leather inserts.  A black 3 spoked drilled stainless steering wheel fronts a great dash that sports molded black and tan padded cowl surrounding black face round AutoMeter gauges, clustered around an arched speedometer as its movie star.  Just a great looking dash, includes a centrally located tachometer, and when behind the wheel, you'll feel like you are piloting the Millennium Falcon!  For the passenger is a full on inwardly curved cove with a built on “Jesus” bar and a small LCD display is in the center of the dash, and just above is the cool dash mounted rear view mirror.  A central vertical satin aluminum panel dives downward from the dash and houses the airflow controls for the Vintage AC & heater and a clock.  The wood knobbed Hurst shifter on top of the hump and is wrapped in a tan leather boot all the while floating in stain free near showroom carpet covering the hump and floors.  Most custom touches take over in the trunk with a full tan carpet lining and a modern AM/FM/CD changer mounted to the bulkhead.

Drivetrain
Gone forever from this Corvette is the "archaic" 327ci V8 and now a 5.7 Liter LS1 V8 mill rests between the inner fenders.  Some Magnetic Red is on dressing up the cold air intake and Corvette LS1 engine covers, but the star of the show is the nearly new Magnuson supercharger perched atop the mill helping to create a consignor-stated 408 dyno proven horsepower.  A T56 6-speed manual transmission is strapped behind this engine, and for those in the know, this V8 and its transmission were donated from a Camaro.  A Dana 44 3.42 limited slip rear axle provides quick starting off the line.

Undercarriage
Wonderfully preserved with no rust seen, and just beautifully restored from the frame off.  A Paul Newman's Car Creations chassis is painted body matching Magnetic Red Metallic provides the support for the clean black fiberglass underbody.  The frame is very solid, and all fiberglass floor pans are in very good condition, all without even a hint of road dirt.  C4 Corvette suspension is on both the front and the rear as are power disc brakes.  Headers and Flowmaster  mufflers are now on for the exhale and the piping is snaking rearward from the 5.7 and looking great doing so!

Drive-Ability
Behind the wheel one feels like a touch of class is presenting to them with the long tasteful dual headlight front leading the way.  This car started immediately, and after a short warm up, it was off to the test track.  It handled very well, accelerated with plenty of power, and came to a straight quick panic stop.  At first glance most would think this an "ordinary" hot rodded C2 Vette, but one press of the loud pedal and being able to handle corners and stop on a dime will show nearly everyone that looks certainly can be deceiving!  A wonderful drive in a wonderfully built car!

Overall a new creation with 1962 style.  Get in, turn the key and feel the power of the modern injected and supercharged V8 engine, and 6-speed transmission push you down the road in style.  Prepare to be ogled!
