1968 Chrysler Newport Convertible

For consignment, a rarely seen car indeed, taking on the shape of a Chrysler Newport 2 door convertible from 1968. Just as the B52's sang in their song Love Shack: “Hop in my Chrysler, it's as big as a whale, and it's about to set sail…. I got me a car, it seats about twenty, so come on, and bring your jukebox money". This one was purchased from the original owner about 1 year ago and has always been garaged and well cared for, she's a turnkey classic all buttoned up and ready to roll topped or topless…the only thing missing is the “If this car is rockkin” …sign!

Exterior
Wonderfully straight and equally as massive steel slabs adorn this car all draped in Antique Ivory paint. Chips, scrapes and scratches are noted throughout the finish but the gaps are well minded, and chrome bumpers and trimmings are all mirror-like and presenting beautifully. This “whale” it's all chromed upfront with its horizontally ribbed heavily veed grille flanked by dual headlights and some signal markers in the bumper. Fender mounted turn signals are on as are the Newport callouts on the rear quarters in your grandmother's script. Small fender skirts adorn the rear quarters adding some definite class. The rear of the car has another sharp V tail panel setup with 3 central Chrysler badges and outboard rectangular tail lights below a trunk lid which hides a 2-bedroom NYC apartment(sic). A near perfect large canvas black convertible top is the icing on this late 60's cake and it has a lightly fogged plastic rear window. When put down the look of the car changes to absolute perfection, just right baby bear.

Interior
Loads of black vinyl covers the tuck and roll inserted seats with smooth bolsters outside. A split bench with a large central armrest, also in smooth vinyl, allows you to skate down the road while styling to the side just a bit. Noted are cracks in the seams for all seating positions along with some fading of the color along with plush sheepskin covers for the front. The backseat has plenty of romper room and is split up top with a center mounted speaker. Upfront, another open V format design dash has a black padded top, and a chromed horizontal ribbed angled dash front. Here the rectangular gauges reside, as well as toggles 60's style that operate the headlights, top, flashers and heating controls. Below all this menagerie is a thin black metal strip which houses the ignition, and a large ashtray lighter setup to allow you to go full cigarette after your back-seat adventures. It also is the bottom frame for the glovebox. Bang bang bang on the door baby! I can't hear you…

Drivetrain
A correct sky blue blocked and valve covered original 383ci V8 with a single 2-barrel carburetor atop, sits snugly within a patinaed but original engine bay. On the back we see an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission which pushes power back to the rear in 8-3/4-inch form with 2.76 gears…Sign says, woo, stay away fools 'Cause love rules at the love shack!

Undercarriage
Some patina, road dirt and surface rust, but all structurally sound framing, floorboards and rockers. Nice patina but no signs of neglect anywhere. Cushy torsion bar front suspension and forgiving leaf springs for the back provide the ride. Power drums are all around underneath. A stock style single exhaust is on, and we see the beginnings of invasive rust in the muffler.

Drive-Ability
Just a pleasure to test drive and she fired right up. No complaining when I pushed the accelerator in gently, then firmly after a nice warmup lap. Handling was good considering the sheer bulk of this car and stopping was right on the dime. A fantastic cruiser, top up or down, offering up plenty of interior space. I realized I needed to pay attention when retiring to the mall, as this is a large car to be throwing around, and you need to have good judgement to keep the steel straight when around other obstacles, particularly when negotiating a 3 point turn, you'll need 5 lanes...literally.

A wonderful example well cared for and only driven on Sundays by a grandmother to church...but I digress…it is very well cared for and garage kept. Mechanically and physically sound, and a looker at any show because it is very unlikely you'll see another one at any show. A turnkey car, goer and shower here for the hook and catching right out of Classic Auto Mall's Halls...just be sure to bring a very large hook! From the overall looks, this whale has not seen any water or salt, or salt water for that matter, on her journeys over the last several years.
