1962 Chevrolet Impala SS Hardtop

1962 Chevrolet Impala SS Hardtop

The 3rd generation Impala ran from 1961-1964 and would end up being one of the most important American cars to date. These were the game changing years in which the Super Sport and the world famous 409 engine were released. The SS Impala played an integral role in formulating what we now know as the original muscle cars.

Here in the classy corridors of the Classic Auto Mall we have all kinds of cars with all kinds of purposes. Some classics to be shown, others to be driven, and others to do both. Here we have a classic that exemplifies early muscle cars. It is to be driven and can be shown with ease. Read on!

Exterior
From its chromed bezel dual headlight flanking egg crate grille, and lower wrap around bumper, to the aluminum machined pattern spear at its belt line, and the dual sets of three taillights within more aluminum trim, and lower bumper, this car sports plenty of nice brite-work, and chrome to feast your eyes on. Wrap around chrome window surrounds, and cursive “Impala SS” badging with the galloping Impala in a circle, and the crossed flags V badge on both front quarter panels shines brightly against its Silver Blue Metallic drenched steel. The paint is very nice, is miles deep and remains so even on the rear fender skirts. A few imperfections and dings are seen mostly on the lower parts of this car, but they are minor. Out back are the traditional Impala 3 tail lights within a ribbed aluminum field and below is a near flawless chrome bumper. The overall presentation is near perfect and looking just fine on the exterior. And lest I forget, it has knock off hub style wheel coverings wrapped in 205/75R14 thin whitewall radials.

Interior
As we swing open the 1 of 2 doors on this hardtop, we are met with warm light blue square pattern stitching, and chromed “buttons” if you will, delineating the squares. A curved thin molding separated these squares from a horizontal ribbed pattern below and embedded throughout are the near perfect handles for window cranking, and door opening. As we move inside 2 nicely presented buckets, framed in chrome flank a center console that is very thin and shoehorned between the buckets, and reaching no further than the seats. The seats are covered in warm smooth blue for the bolsters and the inserts are a silver blue background. Beautifully chromed tubs support the backs of these seats and in back is a matching rear bench. In their tops are more stitched and buttoned rectangular panels just like the doors. A rear bench is across the back with an iconic Impala logoed rear speaker between the top of the bench-style seats. A futuristic stylish early mid century modern near perfect padded dash with original gauges knobs and pulls. All original for the steering wheel in very good condition fronts the dash. Very nice thick pile gray carpeting covers the floors and is protected by factory rubber mats, and a warm blue headliner hangs tightly above.

Drivetrain
The correct 283ci V8 rests under the hood and is of the 1962-1964 era. The engine presents beautifully and has an “orange”, (red if you will), block, and valve covers and could not be cleaner. On top it is fitted with a single 2-barrel carburetor under the single snout black air cleaner assembly and on back a 3-speed manual transmission is bolted on. A 3.36 geared axle turns the tires and all is looking good and nearly factory fresh.

Undercarriage
Drum brakes are on all 4 corners, and they sit within a lightly surface rusted structure of steel, and undercoated floor pans and rockers. Independent coil springs are upfront and on the back is a 4 link with coil sprung suspension. For the exhale we note a dual exhaust system with mismatched mufflers...one being a stock replacement and the other being a Cherrybomb style.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and easy driver with nice acceleration, good bias free panic stopping and all functions working as they should be save for the clock not keeping time. A veritable trip back to 1962 when times were simpler and cars had character.

Overall Impala SS from 1962 this car presents very nicely and goes like a rocket ship. With its period correct engine, dealership invoice, and all maintained, nice interior, the exterior is beautifully preserved too. A fine example of early muscle that is on a few steroids.
