1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible

1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible

Muscle car is an American term for high-performance cars, usually but not limited to rear-wheel drive and fitted with a large and powerful V8 engine.  The term originated for 1960's and early 1970's special editions of mass-production cars which were designed for drag racing.

For consignment, one cool cat from 1964 in the form of a muscle car Ford Galaxie 500.   Nicely presented with 20 yr old paint still retaining its luster and a new interior, we now can talk about a highway cruiser or street bruiser, that will put some wind in your hair, and smiles in the faces that sit within.

Exterior
With a recently re-polished front bumper and grille, we see dual headlights and that undulating horizontal ribbed grille as well as  wide round bezels making up the sexy front of this cat.  F O R D badging on the hood and just aft of the bezels a snazzy trim spear with Galaxy space age type font within begins its run rearward.  First wide, then thinning down before it reaches the rear quarter.  Gaps are minded very nicely on the way and the spear is straight as an arrow (sic).  A shiny rear view round mirror is on each door, and as we move to the rear of the car, turbine style round taillights make  this truly a jet age car.  Straight steel panels are bathed in Raven Black, (Nevermore!!), and on top is a clean white canvas.  Some of the roof structure has some surface rust inside but mostly unremarkable.  A clear plastic window is in the back, but does present with a hole in it.  This jazzy snazzy car floats on 15-inch Torque Thrust 5 spoke blackened wheels with shiny central hubs and deep trim bands and brand new < 30 miles raised white letter BFG Radial T/A's…And the beat goes on!

Interior
Black tuck and roll vinyl inserts which have white piping wrapped in the form of a wide bomber style buckets, but in reality the seats are a squared off split bench with smooth black bolsters.  This same motif is on the rear bench.   These chairs are in excellent condition, and have snappy polished chrome side trimmings on the hinges.  The door panels are also covered in black vinyl, some ribbed and some smooth with two swooping chromed trim pieces breaking the panels up. The dash is all original looking and has been restored, as has the original steering wheel.  It has a Millennium Falcon feel with a horizontal rectangular speedo and dual round insert wide bezel gauges on either side, all white faced with black lettering.  A band of shiny aluminum runs across the dash bottom and houses several knobs and pulls as well as the radio which is an aftermarket AM/FM digital readout version.  Black carpet covers the floors and is clean enough to take your shoes off and wiggle your tootsies in while you laugh at how the other half lives.  Now that's living!

Drivetrain
This rebuilt Cruise-O-Matic, (dontcha luv those 60's tranny names??),  3-speed automatic equipped car comes with a completely rebuilt 390ci V8, and has a single 4 barrel carb which was also recently rebuilt.  Gold painted valve coverings and a chromed trademark open air cleaner allows plenty of fresh clean air to flow to the single 4bbl below.  Power from this mill makes its way to the rear wheels through a Ford 9 inch 3.00 rear.  Noted also is an MSD ignition, and the original Fo-Mo-Co windscreen washer bag in blue.  Noiiiiice!

Undercarriage
Plenty of generous coatings of rustproofing underneath, all with little to none of any signs of rust.  An X frame car.  Independent coil springs upfront, and leaf springs on the rear provide the suspension.  Stopping this mass of 60's rolling iron are drum brakes all around and a good looking dual exhaust right from the factory specs makes its way from engine to tailpipes.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth idler, this car left me with no disappointment.  It can cruise, and it can accelerate on demand.  Everything is functioning on the dash, including the clock.  The auto tranny is “Fantas-tO-Matic” and shifts smoothly.  The horn did not blow, but with the top down I just yelled get the “F” outta my way!  Top down, 42 degree weather and I don't have a care in the world…and they pay me to do this…

A nicely done car, and a driver, never a garage queen.  Good exterior paint, white convertible, and a black vinyl interior, with a powerful mill and 3 speeds of automatic bliss, we are ready to go to hyperdrive.  Meet George Jetson…
