1960 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster

The Sixties was a decade of rocket ships — both NASA's thundering moon machines, and the rubber-burning road missiles launched by the Corvette engineering corps.  As Chevy poured on the horsepower, it also forged what was to become one of the most famous names in Vette lore: Sting Ray.  The popularity of Chevy's sleek two-seater was now abundantly clear: 1960 marked the first year that Vette sales topped five figures, (the company produced 10,261).  Mechanical changes consisted primarily of a few weight-cutting measures.  After this year, the molded rear tail lights would be history.

Now for consignment, and showing in black with silver coves, a Corvette out of 1960 in project form.  So says our consignor, this car is 85% complete with a 383ci stroker V8, Wilwood disc brakes, a new fuel system and a slew of new and original parts including an Al Knoch dash cover.  Ready for your skillful hand, the sky's the limit on what can be done with this consignor stated 1 of 1,268 black on black cars which is also 1 of 544 equipped with power windows....let's get the gears turning, I smell a build in the future. 

Exterior
With the benefit of a fresh paint job in black with silver coves, the dual headlights wide open grille area and opening for the crossed flags badge leads the way for us.  Dual headlight bumps are retained on the front quarter tops, and a bump in the hood showing early signs of what would become the hood scoop.  The windshield and its frame have been removed but are included, as is the unrestored factory hardtop.  Out back of course is the rounded rear quarters patiently waiting for the long curved tail lights on what used to be fins but now long gone with the 1950's!  15-inch steel wheels in silver are wrapped with medium whitewall modern radials.  Noted, in the trunk is a slew of chrome parts.  We see the grille, bumpers, air cleaner, wheel covers as well as various other trimmings.

Interior
A blank slate if you will, with only the recovered black vinyl lowback bomber style bucket seats taking up space in the barren interior.  A chrome ball topped shifter pokes through the aluminum insert panel atop the hump and we note the dash has been stripped of all its gauges.  An Al Knoch dash cover is included with the purchase along with new power window motors.  Our consignor notes that a new wiper system was installed as was all new wiring.  Under the convertible top tonneau cover is a host of more parts ranging from tail lights to trimmings.  

Drivetrain
Under this hood is a complete surprise when opened forward.  It is a gleaming Chevrolet orange bedecked consignor stated new 383ci V8.  Many of the correct brackets and bolt ons are seen along with ribbed aluminum valve covers.  Normal aspiration uses a 4-barrel carburetor and on the back is a consignor stated rebuilt and original Borg Warner T10 manual transmission.  Out back is 3.55 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
A coating of surface rust graces the solid steel frame and suspension as well as the other usual suspects but we see no underlying rust.  Independent coil springs are on front, and on back are leaf springs.  Wilwood disc brakes are on all 4's and we note an entirely new fuel system including the tank and lines.  

A redone body, a powerful V8 under the hood and the original 4-speed all work together to lead this Corvette down the right track as far as a project car.  Close your eyes and imagine cruising the coast, the roar of the V8, the thrum of the exhaust and the wind in your hair.  You're 85% there with this one and you can truly make this your own on almost any front.  Visit our Hallowed Halls and get yourself into Corvette country, opportunities like this don't come along often!
