1990 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

1990 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

Why is it called the “Fox” platform?  I am unable to find a sure reason why Ford identified this chassis as “Fox”.  Some people say that it had something to do with VW's “Rabbit” but I can't confirm that.  I assume the Fox name has something to do with how Ford downsized their vehicles.  Ford's vehicles went from being big like a cow to small and nimble like a Fox.

Here we go, a Fox body convertible 5.0 liter Camaro eater right out of 1990.  A very clean, well kept car that has a snazzy color combo, sweet 15” wheels right out of the 1990's, and plenty of power.  If you are not excited yet, read on and fasten your seatbelt for this 26,813 mileage exempt title status pony.

Exterior
Bright Red bathes this car and is in very nice condition given it is the factory paint job.  No rust, plenty of coves, body matching trimmings, body matching neoprene bumpers and black accents.  All is rust free, and looking nice and shiny.   Aero headlights seamlessly melt into the front of the car.  Fog lights are in the bumper and a blue oval is in the center of the front of the hood.  As we move back, let's stop at the beautiful black canvas convertible top, complete with glass rear window, also in nearly perfect condition.  It moves up and down flawlessly, and when down you get to enjoy the sun beaming on your face, and the wind in your hair.  Black ribs are on the trunk lid available for some extra storage.  On the trailing edge of the lid is a raised part of the luggage rack that emulates a spoiler.  Horizontal gridded cheese grater tail lights are in the rear deck and wrap around the rear quarters.  Below is another wide neoprene body matching  bumper.  15 inch turbine style wheels are on all 4 corners, and the only chrome seen is in the form of the 5.0 badge on the front quarters.  All original and all nicely preserved.

Interior
Full black leather and molded vinyl make up the door panels.  These are housing the power toggles and a small pouch on the bottom for storage.  Inside slightly used high back buckets are in front and a bench in the back.  These chairs have tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters.  The leather has aged very nicely with a few small creases but no faults or tears for these power lumbar equipped front buckets.   A nice black boot cover hides the convertible top when in the down position, and makes it matchy matchy with the interior.  A black console races past the buckets toward the dash. This houses the black shifter, and then makes its way upward making space for the AC and heat dials along with the AM/FM/Cassette sound system.  The dash is a fine mixture of black 90's square design, and the gauge cluster is very clean, with odo showing a mere 26,813 original miles.  Fronting the dash is an air bagged steering wheel with cruise control buttons.

Drivetrain
Be prepared to have your breath taken away when flipping the hood, as you'll be met with that big 5.0 liter V8, complete with all the factory bolt ons as well as electronic fuel injection, and a Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission.  This pushes power back to an 8.8 inch 2.73 TracLoc rear.

Undercarriage
A virtual candy land of black painted steel frame and suspension, with gray sprayed tubs and rockers showing some factory overspray.  This undercarriage looks like it's never been outside and is certainly befitting to a car with 26,813 miles!  The front suspension is independent with coil springs and the rear is a  4 link and coil spring set up.  Power disc brakes are on the front, and power drums on the rear.  All clean and green (well… gray w red overspray! but you know what I mean.)  All rust ffree and factory perfect on the exhaust and mechanicals underneath.

Drive-Ability
I couldn't wait to get into this one, as a pristine Fox body 5 liter has a particular attraction to any car guy, but I get to drive it.  It did not disappoint with a quick lighting fire, and smooth idle, we are off with a pop of the clutch.  Plenty of power, great handling, and I felt like a million bucks behind this wheel.  I had to remind myself I was in a car with low mileage and straight out of 1990 so I kept my test drive to a minimum.

If you are in the market for some 1990 eye candy in the form of a very nicely preserved Fox body 5.0 liter, GT and a drop top, look no further, as this one is a beauty.  It is hard to find any glaring discernible faults on this classic.  And it will be harder to find one better than this example, gracing our Hallowed Halls.  Like new but from 1990. Award winning fer sur.
