1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle

1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle

The need for a people's car, (Volkswagen in German), its concept and its functional objectives, was formulated by the leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, who wanted a cheap, simple car to be mass-produced for his country's new road network. Lead engineer Ferdinand Porsche and his team took until 1938 to finalize the design. The result was the first Volkswagen, and one of the first rear-engined cars since the Brass Era. With 21,529,464 produced, the Beetle is the longest relationship running and most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made.

This very nicely kept 1973 Super Beetle, which has had an open checkbook restoration with upgrades so states our consignor in anticipation of another 49 years of reliable service. Many aspects are original and kept that way of not in need of restoration. The complete engine rebuild was performed by a certified Lancaster, PA Porsche mechanic, and the car is looking snappy. Will you get the bug, or did you get the jab!?

Exterior
This sport bug is set apart from the masses by the use of all black trimmings in lieu of chrome. It is bathed in Saturn Yellow, and I can assure you it looks great. To make it a bit more efficient, the windows were removed and the fenders taken off then it was sprayed. An OEM style stripe kit is seen with a wide black stripe and 2 thinner edge stripes in red bordering the wide black one. Bumpers are black, side view mirrors are black, as per the Sport package, the front and rear fender guards and a rear engine lid has grilles. Elephant footprint rear tail lighting is on and just below, another black bumper with a central yellow stripe is seen, and dual black exhaust tips peeking out from underneath. Running boards connect the fenders, which show 1973 turn signals attached to the front fenders. 15-inch Lemmerz GT sport wheels are starring on all 4 corners, and 195/65R15 rubber from the 18th week of 2019 is wrapping them.

Interior
Starting upfront under the hood is a pristine storage area all covered in black vinyl. Next up are the door panels which look factory and showroom also in all black right down to the window cranks and door actuator. Shiny vinyl and charcoal gray for the inserts cover the correct Recaro high back buckets in front with headrests, and the bench in back matches nicely. These are original to the car as are the door cards. For the dash it's the KISS theory with a bump up in front of the driver that contains a large circular gauge cluster within that circle. A few knobs and pulls are underneath running across the dash until eventually meeting up with the AM radio. Fronting the dashes a sport steering wheel by Petri AG, and just to mention again, the seats are by Recaro. Black carpeting covers the floors and in the center of the hump is a small stick shifter in a molded storage tray and cup holder operation. The headliner is white, and tight as a drum, and gets to look down upon all this sporty menagerie.

Drivetrain
A bit more customization for this V-Dub as it sports a 1600cc horizontally opposed, air cooled, carbureted with a 1-barrel carburetor for this engine. As noted, it was completely and professionally rebuilt. This is attached to a 4 speed manual transmission. The rear mounted power plant sports dual exhaust with black exhaust tips. Note the engine bay has been nicely finished and detailed. Also all new clutch, exhaust, and all associated lines, heat and cooling tubes and emissions equipment.

Undercarriage
Front and rear suspension are independent, with the front having transverse torsion bars and the rear sporting semi trailing arm suspension. The rear axle codes out at 3.875 ratio. Drum brakes are all around. Solid rust free stamped floor pans and clean rockers are noted. The fuel tank was boiled out and coated, then new fuel lines were added on. This is also true for the brake lines and brakes are all newly installed.

Drive-Ability
This car started right up, and drove smoothly. It shifted well, and was dead silent from the suspension when pushed into a turn. All working functions, and that wonderful tinny exhaust sound you can only get from these classic bugs. As stated this car can definitely be driven anywhere with complete confidence. I picked Florida and warmer weather! Let's hop in and go, but I'm drivin'.

A very well done top to bottom restoration/rebuild for this Sport bug. No expenses spared, and basically a like new 1973 example. Nifty color scheme, (although I assumed Saturn was red, but who cares it's cool in yellow). Love the sound, love the handling, and love the comfort with utilitarian aspect. OUCH… I just got bit by a bug!
