2012 Ford F150 SuperCab

2012 Ford F150 Supercab

The 12th-generation F-150 was introduced for the 2009 model year as an update of the Ford full-size truck platform. Similar to its predecessor, these trucks are distinguished by their Super Duty-style grilles and head lamps; standard-cab models again have two doors instead of four. The flareside bed was continued until 2010, dropped along with the manual gearbox; outside of Mexico, the Lincoln Mark LT was replaced by the F-150 Platinum. A new model for 2010 included the SVT Raptor, a dedicated off-road pickup. In 2010, Ford shifted its electronics from a general electric module base to the computerized and programmable body control module, allowing for fewer parts differences and programmable upgrade options from the dealer or factory. In 2011, Ford reintroduced the 5.0 in the F Series with its new 5.0 Coyote dual overhead cam TiVVT engine with 360 hp. As part of a major focus on fuel economy, the entire engine lineup for the F-150 was updated for the 2011 model year. Along with the new V8 engine, the F-150 gained a new 3.7 L base V6 engine, and a powerful twin-turbocharged 3.5 L V6, dubbed EcoBoost by Ford.

Between supply chain issues, chip shortages, and dealership markups, a new truck isn't in the cards these days. What's a gal or fella to do when the markup on a used vehicle can exceed the cost of when it was new? Well, I have your answer! For consignment and looking better than most of what's on the local new and used car stores lots, a 2012 Ford F150 Supercab 4x4. Loaded with options such as the FX-4 Offroad Package, Power Package, Appearance Package, and even the Luxury Package, this truck has it all except for the power moonroof. Add in a small lift kit, 18" wheels with knobby tires, LED lighting, and a properly installed upgraded Jensen stereo, eat your heart out Carmax!

Exterior
Bathed in its factory applied Flame Blue Metallic and sporting factory applied black hockey stick stripes, (part of the appearance package), this truck is just a stunner from every angle. From the body color keyed front bumper with its blacked-out grille hovering just above to the integrated aero style headlamp and turn signal assembly this truck is hot! Moving down the long sheet metal slab sides we note a complete lack of chrome, all is blue and black, completely rust and dent free I might add. 4 doors are on for ease of entry for the rear seat passengers and for hauling, a short box bed is on. This bed is lined with a factory Ford plastic liner and looks like new. Wrapping up the tail end is a larger than life Flame Blue tailgate and rear bumper, both in beautiful condition. The only deviation from the blue and black them are the red F-150 emblems on both front fenders and another gracing the tailgate. 18x9 Fuel Rebel wheels with a 12mm offset are bolted onto the 4 corners and are shod in M/T 295/70R18 Baja Boss knobby rubber, all of which only have a consignor stated 5,000 miles on them and don't rub even at full steering lock.

Interior
A swing of the doors and the hits just keep on coming! Perfectly molded textured black plastic forms to the contours of the various armrests, speaker housings and some lower stowage bins. A smooth charcoal insert is on as an accent and serves as the housing for the power windows and locks and more of these panels appear, flanking the chrome door handle release. Slipping inside and peering upfront the dash is all black fronting which was carefully molded to the instrument cluster, A/C venting and other controls. In the dash center is an aftermarket Jensen AM/FM/Bluetooth/Apple Carplay/Android Mirror/Sirius XM/Reverse Camera stereo. All this is surrounded by a near perfect black padded dash top and passenger glove box. Fronting this well-appointed dash is a leather trimmed black steering wheel with several push button controls for the stereo that continue to work with the upgraded head unit. Turning to the seats, we note black leather buckets with separate headrests and some tuck and roll inserts. Red piping finishes off the seats which are both heated, cooled and power controlled for both driver and passenger. For the rear seat we see a long bench stretching from door to door and matching the front buckets in both color and design. A black console races between the seats and contains a padded top armrest/glove box, cup holders and the ergonomic shifter handle that is equipped with a manual shifting mode with up and down controls handled by push buttons on the left side of the shift knob. Black carpeting floods the floors and above is a charcoal fuzzy broadcloth headliner with an additional overhead console with a flip down Audiovox DVD player for the rear seat passengers. Squeezably soft and luxurious!

Drivetrain
Under the hood we are met with a 5.0 Liter Coyote V8 with an attached K&N cold air intake. Supple hoses are noted along with wiring looms and plastics galore. On the back is a 6R80 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to 3.73 geared axles with the rear axle being of the electric locker style. All wrapped up and looking as good as when it was showroom new.

Undercarriage
All solid with only minor surface rust showing on the untreated components such as the axles, suspension parts, and body hangers. Independent coil spring suspension is on the front and for the rear we see leaf springs. A Motofab 2" lift kit is on the suspension to give the truck a proper level look. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners and OEM single exhaust is noted.

Drive-Ability
A push of the remote start button and the truck fired up, (hey its cold here in Pennsylvania). Once an ample warm up was allotted I climbed my less than athletic figure up into the truck and promptly turned on the heated seat. On the test track this truck performed well with great acceleration from the 5.0 Coyote, good handling, and braking that stops the truck on a dime. This F150 handled everything our test track had to off and quite frankly I felt like a big rig driver behind the wheel. All options were working well during my drive, and I had to pry my cohort away from the rear DVD screen as he was engrossed in a Muppet Show marathon.

When we say we never know what's going to come through the door we mean it in earnest. From Model T's to new Corvettes we see it all, but in this odd era of shortages we live in it's a rarity to see a late model pickup roll through the doors. Fully loaded with the exception of a sunroof and looking ready to tackle the Baja 1000 this truck has it all. Loaded with luxury, convenience, and power it's sure not to last long in our hallowed halls.
