1931 Oldsmobile F31 Cabriolet

1931 Oldsmobile F31 Cabriolet

Oldsmobile only sold one line of cars in 1931 and it was the F-31 Series. The six-cylinder engine featured a new intake valve porting and a Stromberg downdraft carburetor, manifold heat control, drop forged connecting rods, and cast grey iron pistons. The block was cast from close grained chrome nickel alloy iron and the radiator was a Harrison cellular unit. The worm with three-tooth steering was adequate, so were the duo-servo brakes. The DeLuxe package offered wooden or wire wheels, twin side-mounts, front and rear bumpers, and a trunk platform.

For consignment, a 1931 F31 in Cabriolet form. This depression era car puts on the ritz for an affordable price, and sold plenty of units in 1931. A classy looker with yellow paint over black, enough spoked wheels and tires to go cross country, and a canvas top which can be lowered to enjoy the fresh country air.

Exterior
A wonderfully proportioned Cabriolet with a fancy chromed radiator cowl surround, winged goddess topper, flanking big round headlight, dual horns and bumper mounted running/fog lights, the onlookers will see you coming a mile away. Black curvaceous fenders have a small signal light mounted to their tops and as we move past the yellow painted engine cowl, we meet and greet an inset spare tire with yellow painted wire wheels wide whites and a chain mounted mirror on either side. The running boards attach the front and rear undulating fenders which are in black and are all rust free. Noted is a shiny window surround on the windshield which can be lowered to flat when the top is down making this car look like a speedster. A canvas top in beige is showing slight smudging, but it is still in very nice condition. In back, the C curved rear is a rumble seat and just above the bumper is a large canvas and leather covered trunk for all the goods to go …well, somewhere! Shiny curved bumpers are in front and on the back, stalked tail lighting protrude from the lower part of the fenders and we see wonderfully preserved yellow painted wire wheels with central shiny caps and wide white wall tires all around.

Interior
A swing of the simple doors and we have black vinyl door panels and shiny levers and cranks with matching knobs. Inside, a full black vinyl bench is in fair condition showing some wear and a crack in the center revealing the foam inserts. The dashes full metal black jacket and has beautifully shaped vertical rounded over rectangle white faced gauges and a central shield shape in textured forged steel which houses knobs and the key. The floors are rubber, and in the center is a long shifter reaching for the driver's hand. The original bakelite black steering wheel is on. Some mold and staining can be seen on the inside of the canvas top and its corresponding structural steel rod coverings.

Drivetrain
Under the cowled hood is a beautifully restored 197.5ci inline 6 cylinder. It is original to this car and looks fab. A 1-barrel carb is on the side, and an original to this car, 3 speed manual transmission is on back. The rear pumpkin weighs in at 4.56 gear ratio.

Undercarriage
Leaf sprung suspension, mechanical drum braking and a stock exhaust are a few of the highlights under this well preserved, slightly patinaed steel undercarriage. Just a slight smattering of surface rust is noted, however no invasive rust to be seen.

Drive-Ability
Runs like a champ, with no known defects or in-ops during the test drive. I put my crack decoder in the rumble seat because there is a glass window in the back of the canvas top which remained UP during the test drive. The silence was golden!

A nicely earlier restored version right out of the depression era, and whomever could afford it was certainly living large. A classy carriage with some power, and comfy interior, this REO never looked so Olds!
