1971 Citroen 2CV Convertible

1971 Citroen 2CV Convertible

A lollopy, characterful, ancient Citroen that has become legend.  Produced between 1948 and 1990, (yes, that really is 42 years of production), the 2CV, (deux-chevaux or 'two horses'), was originally conceived in the late Thirties as a rugged, useful, affordable car.  Famously, it was designed with very specific requirements, including being able to carry four people and 50kg of goods at 30mph, across muddy and unpaved roads if necessary.  In fact, it was suggested at the prototype stage that the 2CV should be able to carry a basket of eggs across a ploughed field without whipping up an interior omelette, and also manage something like 80mpg while doing so.  That's one hell of a design brief, and yet, after quite a few prototypes, Citroen actually managed it.  **Thx to Top Gear/Tom Ford**

For consignment a 1971 version as titled, but in actuality a VIN VERIFIED 1985 version to get it into the US and all their importing laws. Also it's a consignor stated “Dolly” which only debuted in 1985.   From its humble beginnings as a car which could actually be ordered without any interior upholstery, to a show stopper when they would see how many clowns could fit into one, to more recently becoming star of the silver screen, now a cult classic.  Not changing in design too much since its inception, this version has a consignor stated original paint in gray, (which has inclusions and orange peel, as well as some dings sprayed over), so it is a good change its a respray.  Although looking good to say the least. A truly “dent de pole” right here in our Hallowed Halls.  Toulouse Lautrec eat your heart out.

Exterior
In true Deux Chevaux fashion it is a Dolly, from its Dolly debut year of 1985.  This one is two tone with doors and side panels in darker gray, and 40's fenders, rounded hood and rounded roofline in white.  Hang off the fender, lights in chrome with visors and a fog light on the front bumper, and a small lightning bolt emblazoned grille and a fully retracting roofline sunroof in canvas, this car just bleeds fun.  It's a definite collector, with the passenger cabin looking much like the VW with its rounded styling.  In fact Hitler went to great lengths to get the tooling for this car based on its suspension and ability to go virtually anywhere without tipping over, but alas was unsuccessful.  The rear of the car appears as an “airflow “ car would have come right out of 1940's.  With the cost being half, upkeep being a fraction of a sports or other classic you can have twice the fun.

Interior
A swing of the simple doors the panels show up in black broadcloth with the only embellishments being the speaker and a strap to pull them shut.  Inside charcoal gray carpeting floods the floors and above wide blue broadcloth buckets in excellent condition grace the interior in the front, and an overstuffed bench is in the back.  The dash retains the simplicity of design with plenty of storage in open shelving.  In front of the driver is a small dash in black metal with a central gauge and some extra toggles knobs and lights.  The center of the dash is gray textured trunk paint, and it houses the ignition and a traffic minder to help you see the lights above without craning around the windshield visor.  The canvas top folds back past the rear glass and when closed, conceals virtually the entire roofline and when top is down, leaving it to the open air.  Je te plumerai—right from our showroom floor.

Drivetrain
Under “le hood” sits a clean 602cc 2 cylinder engine which has a purported 29hp output.  There is a 1 barrel Solex carburetor, and it sports a 4 speed manual transmission.  The rear axle is weighing in at 4.125.  All is clean and nicely preserved under this hood.  Ooooh LA LA!!

Undercarriage
Disc braking and independent suspension are unique to this car and allow the suspension to interconnect via a series of springs, some called volute springs, and other parts that Mein Fuhrer desperately wanted to get his hands on, it was that good.  Minimal surface rust and some road dirt is the only thing I see under this wonderful whimsical car.

Drive-Ability
Not unlike the clowns that pile into this thing, my partner in crime, our crack decoder, and resident clown, along with myself took it through its paces.  It ran beautifully, handled like a champ, and off road will definitely go through anything that will not be too tall to hang it up on its undercarriage.  Very unique experience not like any other we've had the pleasure to drive.  And enough with the french accented talking during the entire experience Lumiere!

Worth the price of admission, all in very nice condition, and you will be the only one in your county to have one, (maybe even your state but one never knows what lurks in the shadows).  Truly French in every aspect from a company which was forward thinking from its inception, the Citroen 2 CV. Viola!!!
