1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible 

Until the 1950s, most American auto manufacturers made one size of car: large.  Imports from Europe such as Volkswagen, Renault, and Fiat showed that there was a market in the U.S. for smaller cars, mostly as a second car or an alternative for the budget-minded.  Led by General Manager Edward N. Cole, Chevrolet designed a revolutionary new car.  It was powered by an air-cooled horizontal six-cylinder engine made almost entirely out of aluminum.  The engine was mounted in the rear of the car, driving the rear wheels through a compact automatic transaxle.  Suspension was independent at all four wheels.  There was no conventional frame; it was the first unibody built by Fisher Body and the styling was unconventional for Detroit, subtle and elegant, with no tail fins or chrome grille. 

This Monza Corvair has a 164ci flat 6 engine, as well as a 4 speed manual transmission, and other options consistent with a Monza upgrade.  The overall car is showing in good condition, mechanically sound, and true to 1964 model.  A repainted exterior in Bahama Green is in good condition with few blemishes. 

Exterior
A rust free, minimal blemished exterior is covered in Bahama green.  All chromed surfaces appear in good condition, as well as correct skirt brightwork and badging.  Chromed wire knockoff styled wheel coverings are seen on all 4 corners.  The convertible top is white and clean, and raises and lowers simply and efficiently with an electrical switch.  This is courtesy a new motor, and some new frame bushings just put on.  The plastic rear window is clear.  A matching boot covering is hiding the top when down, and with all the chrome trimmings, dark green paint, knockoff chromed wire wheels covers and snappy headlight bezels, this car is right in the middle of the realm of 60's cool.  I'm grabbing my wayfarers, you get your bandanna and we're goin' fer a cruise babe!

Interior
Dropping the top reveals Light Fawn covered interior, on the door panels, seats and dash top.  Doors are accented with horizontal molded ribs in the vinyl, and chrome accenting.  Low back buckets are nice and wide and have tuck and roll inserts with smooth bolsters, darker sides and backs and some chrome trimmings to keep everything on the up and up.  A rear bench seats 3 comfortably and matches the front also in excellent condition.  We note a new vinyl bolster installed on the driver's outer seat upright which doesn't quite match the rest of the upholstery.   A wonderful padded dash top in fawn has an eyebrow in front of the steering wheel that sports an aluminum panel housing blackface circular gauges with white lettering and numbering.  On the passenger side, another eyebrow frames the aluminum clad glove box door with Corvair/Spyder badges.  In the center is a more modern AM/FM/Single CD radio reminiscent of the original which is still with the car now in the trunk.    On the hump is the shifter reaching for the drivers right hand and it has a white ball topper.

Drivetrain
Seen is a 164ci flat 6 cylinder engine very clean and mechanically smooth and sound, sitting in a well kept rear engine bay.  This engine has a Spyder badged turbocharger that states 150hp!  On top is attached to a 1 barrel carb. The 4-speed manual transmission is on back, and is standard Monza fare.  Also in back, not unlike the mill, is a 3.55 rear axle.  An overall beautiful engine bay presentation.

Undercarriage
Independent front suspension with coil springs are on and the same is true for the rear.   Drum braking on all 4 corners, and a stock clean exhaust is there for the exhale. The rear drum brake have recently been rebuilt with new drums, hoses, shoes, hardware, and lines and the fronts were treated to new hoses. A slight patina is seen on all the black painted rust free stamped steel floor pans and undercarriage structure.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and a push of the button and the top goes down with ease and I'm feeling the 60's vibe.  Off to the test track where this car performs beautifully, and all is working just wonderfully.  Very clean, and runs like an Italian watch…wait..is that good?!  but of course!

This consignment is for the air cooled rear engine aficionado on a budget.  Considering the car is now 56 years young, it's looking fab.  The Monza with sportier interior, and the 4 speed transmission, provided the second fastest Corvair, losing out to only the Monza Spyder for the first gen production run of the Corvair.  Eat your heart out Ralph Nader.  Oh BTW, did he own Ford stock??  Politicians  Sheesh…
