1968 Chevrolet Bel Air Sedan

1968 Chevrolet Bel Air Sedan

Classic Chevrolets never go out of style, and on these early '60s Chevys, it's just plain elegant.  The bodies were beautifully styled, and the excesses of the 1950s were clearly behind them as the stylists brought out the all-new Chevrolets.  There are no numbers that resonate louder with car guys than 4-9-6. and this consignment fits the bill.

For consignment, purchased in 2019 and in pure grocery getter 6 cylinder 3 on the tree form, our consignor could not wait to tear all that pedestrianism out and soup it up just a bit.  This includes the insertion of a high performance big block 496ci V8, TKO600 tranny, and now power steering setup.  Let's go racin'.

Exterior
Leading the way is a raked inward egg crate grille with dual head lighting flanking either side.  A shiny bumper below and more egg crate below and a bottom trimming of solid chrome undulating with the front styling with signal lighting floating between these two shiny bars.  A horizontal bowtie badge on the hood lead in, and front quarters sporting 427 badge and nicely scripted type font of BelAir near the doors.  Just above in this sea of Grotto Blue is a body long trim spear.  The B pillar meets up with a bump up rise on the rear quarters and these frame the trunk lid.  On back, dual tail lights are inset into the shiny rear bumper, and these are round save for their tops which are squared off.  15-inch polished Torque Thrust 5 spoke wheels are on all 4 corners and wrapped in fat and skinny black wall rubber.

Interior
Near perfect blue vinyl and some chrome accenting makes up the door panels and serves as the bolster material for the front split bench and solid rear bench seats.  These have a textured undulating ribbed broadcloth in just a bit of lighter blue tint, and show some staining and tearing at the seams particularly in the front drivers seat.  Blue carpeting covers the floors, and the original GM styled dash is in front.  An aftermarket tachometer is mounted to the steering column, as well as 2 aftermarket gauges to keep the pulse of the mechanicals mounted just under the dash.  In the center hump is a Hurst shifter.

Drivetrain
Ripping the original 6 banger from its core, this car now has a hefty 496ci V8.  It is topped with an Edelbrock intake manifold and a 4 barrel carburetor also courtesy Edelbrock.  Now on back is a Tremec TKO600 5 speed manual tranny and a Ford 9 inch 3.50 geared rear axle.  Headers and a Turbo muffler are on for the exhale.

Undercarriage
Some patina for the undercoated stamped pieces of the undercarriage, some worn off at spots.  Surface rust for the cast pieces and framing, but all structurally sound.  Larger rear drum braking has been added in, and the front has disc braking.  Independent coil spring suspension is on front, and a 3 link with coil spring is in the back.  CPP power steering has been added for ease of low speed cornering as well.

Drive-Ability
A quick fire up and the horses began their gallop on the test track.  It has plenty of power and also cruises breathlessly at 70mph on the highway.  As noted, power steering has been added, and the braking is very solid on the panic stop, and with all those horses going forward, that's a good thing.  The turn signals were inoperable, and the E brake does not hold, otherwise all good for this grocery getter come hot rod.

1968 was a good year for the Bel Air, and gone are all the extra embellishments that came with the tri five era Bel Airs.  This car with that big big block, Tremec transmission, and original interior shows nicely and goes even better.  Hurry in for this will not last long on our shelves.
