1927 Ford Model T Roadster

1927 Model T Roadster  #4485

The fast, flat alkali plains of the western Mojave have beckoned a certain type of individual obsessed with speed and the machines that take them there for nearly 100 years now.  Sometime during the 1920s, weekend gearheads from greater Los Angeles, in an effort to avoid the law meddling in their “hoodlum” street racing activities, began heading out to Muroc Dry Lake some 100 miles north of Downtown L.A.  Here, they would pit their chopped-up four-bangers, (mostly modified four-cylinder Ford Model T's), against one another in unbridled, multi-car lineups across the dry lake bed.  These rough-and-tumble fellows were some of the earliest pioneers of drag racing. (Thx to Kim Stingfellow)

For consignment, a square tube framed, 1927 Ford replica body and a 6 cylinder mill made to be raced on a lakebed, with a custom look, long wheelbase, and even longer exhaust pipes.  Spun disc wheel coverings for better aero, and pretty much stripped down for less weight, this car harkens back to the early days of who could go faster, which is an inherent quality of the human being.

Exterior
A red painted replica body is held on top of the square tubular frame with a steel floor.  The open sided cowled hood, firewall and radiator cowl are looking much like the Model T sans any fenders or top.  A single headlight in a red bezel mounted on either side of the radiator light the way and in back a black roll bar protects the driver and any passengers from the disaster of a roll over.  On the back, the bumper is shaved and the rear roll pan has the tail lighting attached.  The rear rumble seat has been removed and now an aluminum gas tank sits within a black carpeted trunk that also houses the battery.  Giving the feeling of speed are dual long exhaust pipes that run from the mill, and ascend upward to the back of the car where they are abruptly sliced off.

Interior
Keep it simple and it does with a black flat back bench with padded square seats.  A custom aluminum dash houses a lineup of round gauges with shiny bezels and white faces with black numbers and letters as well as pointers.  Black carpeting is on the floors and a rally steering wheel is rising toward the driver from the dash.  A dash mounted oval rear view mirror and a long shift lever complete the dry lakebed racer look.

Drivetrain
Inside the hood is a 250ci Inline 6 cylinder circa 1973-79.  There is a 1 barrel carburetor atop and a 3 speed manual transmission on back.  The rear axle is a Ford 8-inch version.  The exhale is through headers and the red painted engine block is looking great.

Undercarriage
Nicely done with black painted square tubular framing and steel floor pans also in black.  A silver painted pumpkin and a shiny exhaust are noted, as well as a totally drip free bottom end.  Transverse leaf springs are on the front and rear and hydraulic drum brakes are on the 4's.

Drive-Ability
An interesting drive where comfort is not a priority, going fast is, and it accomplishes that in spades.  Solid braking and a bit of a scary ride, as you are literally letting it all hang out there.

A tribute to the rouge street racers that traded the police patrolled streets of LA for a dry lakebed.  A reproduction body, some aero hubcaps and that long exhaust all stripped down to the bare minimums, and let's go racin'.
