1990 Buick Reatta Convertible

1990 Buick Reatta Convertible

The Buick Reatta is a low-volume transverse front-engine, front-wheel drive, two-door, two-seater grand tourer/sports car manufactured and marketed by Buick as a coupe,(1988–1991), and convertible, (1990-1991), — both featuring a 3.8-Liter V6 engine and shortened version of the GM E platform, the same one that underpinned the Buick Riviera.   As Buick's first two-seater and its first convertible since the 1985 Riviera, the Reatta was manufactured in a highly specialized assembly program at the Reatta Craft Center (later known as the Lansing Craft Center) in Lansing, Michigan—achieving production of over 21,000 units in four years.

For consignment, a 1990 Buick Reatta Convertible with a title verified 57,252 miles.  This was the second-to-last production year for this 2-seater car and this particular car was purchased new by a sharp minded woman who then traded it back in at a Buick dealership.  From there the car was purchased by a salesman at said dealership then sold to one of the service technicians who is also the present owner and consignor.  All original with the exception of the Konig wheels and an added CD changer in the truck, this always dealership serviced, (with supporting paperwork), has all of its accoutrements in the factory binder, has always been garage kept, never saw foul weather and even the factory floor mats were never used.  After my drive, I can affirm the ad-men of the day were correct....Reatta, People Will Notice.

Exterior
Covered in White with a good quality paint job that our consignor states is the factory application sums up the exterior steel.  Well minded gaps bring the body together nicely and up front the hidden headlights are functioning and pop up on demand.  The white canvas convertible top is in good condition but does present with one small seam separation and some minor soiling of the canvas.  A small rounded trunk area houses a storage area, which is accessible via 2 locking panels located in the interior rear of the passenger compartment.  Trunk is clean and covered in heavy duty felt-like material and we note the addition of a multi-cd changer on the right.  Polished 16" thick 5 spoke Konig aluminum wheels are on all 4 corners and for the purist, the original wheels and tires are included.

Interior
Swinging open the long doors and we are met with oxblood leather, red carpeting, with black plastic accenting, and plenty of power conveniences.  Power locks, power windows, power mirrors, and a 16-way power seat adjustment.  As for the seats, two leather buckets flank a center console/glovebox/armrest/gear shift lever.  The leather shows nicely with a few fold lines and nice patina.  A turn of the ignition key reveals an all-electronic LCD dash readout area, including a climate control center and AM/FM/Cassette radio.  A leather wrapped steering wheel fronts the dash.  Also noted is the aforementioned locking panels behind the seats for extra storage.

Drivetrain
For 1990, the "L27" 3800 fuel injected engine and 4T60-E transmission replaced the "LN3" and 4T60 units.  The engine runs smoothly, as well as the transmission shifts effortlessly.  A 2.97 final drive turns the front tires.  No corrosion or dirt is noted in the engine bay and things are looking nearly showroom fresh.

Undercarriage
Intermittent road dirt is seen throughout the undercarriage but is minimal.  Floorpans, rockers and frame are very sound with little to no rust.  A few “bottoming out” scratched areas are seen, and the underside of the transverse mounted engine and transmission remain dry.  This car sports a fully independent suspension with coil springs up front and a transflex leaf spring in the rear, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, and front wheel drive. Top speed is electronically limited to 125 mph.

Drive-Ability
This sporty Buick fired right up, and performed flawlessly on the test track.  It handled very nicely, had good acceleration and performed a beautiful quiet low RPM cruise.  Stopping was great, and I found all controls in working order.  The top moves up and down manually and I spent a few moments after my drive to acclimate myself with the myriad of controls available to my fingertips.

A sporty little car whose short run was due to many complicated scenarios merging at the same time.  The kind of car that you will either love or hate the design, and this one presents beautifully with no known issues, detailed service paperwork and a known history.  Visit our Hallowed Halls and follow the words of the ad-men....Go Ahead, You Deserve It.  Reatta!
